KNCC Stained Glass Windows
KNCC is very fortunate in having been given the three stained glass windows which were formerly on the staircase in Balrossie House. They are in the Art Nouveau style and have an oval containing a painted and stained ship in the centre of each panel. The ships are named Marjorie, Gleniffer and Cruiser but the signifi cance of these names is not known.
Balrossie was built in 1899 by Richard Hubbard Hunter of Hunter Barr & Co as a home for sailors’ orphans. The buildings cost £30,000 and were also supported by Sir Charles Cayzer, owner of the Clan Line of steamers, to the tune of £10,000. These men were friends and contemporaries of Sir William Quarrier.
These windows have been installed in the Kilmacolm Community Centre as an illuminated panel, situated high up in the Atrium area where they form a highly decorative feature.
The restoration of these panels was undertaken by Scottish Glass Studios, based in Glasgow, and KNCC is grateful to Mark Main and Mark Bambrough for their professional services. KNCC is also grateful for the generosity of an anonymous benefactor who kindly agreed to fund this work.
