Kilmacolm Nursery Kilmacolm Nursery Class has had a busy start to this session.

Mrs McIntosh has been working with groups of children on a new initiative called, “The Right Wee Blether”. As the name suggests participation encourages children to talk and formulate new ideas and ways of thinking. After staff consultation we will change our practice so that all nursery children will benefi t from this initiative.

We are blessed in Kilmacolm Nursery by having a superb outside play area and although we have some suitable toys, we would like to improve the provision of equipment for the children. As you will appreciate the cost of such equipment is considerable and it is with this in mind that the staff arranged a sponsored obstacle course with the provision of tea and coffee for parents who were invited to come and support the children’s efforts. This enjoyable activity is reaping good results with about £90 raised in the tearoom and sponsored money totalling over £200 being received after only a few days!

Strawberry Field Nursery

This term at Strawberry Field Nursery, the children have made the most of the last of the good weather. We have enjoyed our outdoor areas using our play equipment, playing outdoor games and getting plenty of fresh air and exercise, for the children and the staff! We have been harvesting the last of the vegetables the children have grown over the summer, including potatoes, peas beans and parsnips.

Recently we had a visit from “Animal Man” who brought a variety of friendly animals including: Rabbits, mice, a rat, snakes, lizards, tarantula, and a duck with attitude called Daisy!

We are now beginning our Autumn activities, the children have been out on Autumn walks collecting leaves, acorns, conkers etc.

The Fire Brigade also came to visit and let the children loose on their engine, using the hose, siren and trying on helmets, uniforms etc. Despite the rainy day the children all had a great time.

Groups have been visiting the library recently to enjoy Bookbug sessions with Pamela. The walk to and from the village offers great opportunities for learning - noticing road signs, discussing road safety, looking at houses and gardens and talking to other pedestrians all contribute to making these trips very benefi cial activities. Thanks are offered to all the parents who have accompanied the groups and shared the experience. Groups also visited, “The Hub” where each child personally bought their own drink and received a receipt to prove it!

Noticing the changing season and all the festivals associated with autumn is what we are looking forward to over the next few weeks, did I mention the weather!

St Fillan’s Primary School’s Annual Halloween Disco

Friday 28th October, Carrick Centre, Houston 7.30pm

Due to it’s growing popularity, this year’s Family Halloween Disco has been moved from the school gym to the Carrick Centre to give us more room for more fun! There will be a disco with music voted in from the children of St Fillan’s, a bar area with seating for adults, dooking for apples, face-painting, tattooing, best costume competitions for all ages and much more! All welcome.

Young Musicians

Once again Johnstone Rotary Club has hosted a Musical Evening with the aim of giving young musicians, from the local high schools, an opportunity to gain experience performing before an audience and, of course, to provide members and their friends with some lovely music. Everyone enjoyed a fi ne meal and this was followed by the musical entertainment.

We were treated to a varied range of musical performances provided by eleven talented pupils from Gryffe, Johnstone, Linwood and St. Benedict’s High Schools. It was a pleasure to have with us some parents and staff from the schools taking part.

We would like to thank the teaching staff for their continued dedication and the enthusiasm they show for our events.

This proved to be a most enjoyable and successful evening and our congratulations and thanks go to Rotarian Tom McKay who organized the event and did a fi ne job as Master of Ceremonies.
