Winter Gardens
Just because winter is approaching - with a vengeance - doesn’t mean that the work of Brighter Bridge of Weir stops. The group is already planning and planting for next year and to add to their collection of 1500 narcissus bulbs, the local Rotary Club generously donated 1000 crocus bulbs. Rotary members and friends helped to plant many of them in the Torr Road garden. Planting also took place in the grounds of Gryffe Motor Engineers on Main Street. These should create lovely displays in early spring - slugs, birds and squirrels permitting!
It has been gratifying to note that there has been no vandalism at any of the sites improved by the group’s work. However, several plants have had to be replaced at the raised bed at Tannery Brig, due to the theft of the originals. Someone as yet unknown has taken advantage of the hard work and generosity of others to carefully remove some plants, evidently to enhance their own private environment.
Ending on a positive note, Brighter Bridge of Weir’s Chair, Alice Johnstone, extends the group’s good wishes to The Bridge, whose efforts to retain Post Offi ce services and create a community centre in the village have been successful. She said “Good luck from Brighter Bridge of Weir to The Bridge. Together with other local groups our efforts should help to maintain the sense of community spirit and civic pride that will make our village a better place to live.”
The picture shows one of the volunteers resting at the newly created garden at Gryffe Motor Engineers in Main Street, Bridge of Weir.

Bethlehem and Bridge Of Weir
There is indeed an unlikely link between Bethlehem and BOW for where else would you expect to fi nd beautiful Bethlehem and Holy Land handicrafts but here? These lovely olive wood nativities and decorations, ceramics, Palestinian embroidered bags, purses, scarves etc are all available from OLIVE TREE charity, here in Bridge of Weir. Silver Jerusalem jewellery, Bethlehem mother of pearl, olive oil, soaps etc have arrived too, not to mention hand made speciality cards.
These reasonably priced but exquisite and unusual crafts are very special because every purchase means that someone in great need is helped. Never have folk been poorer or more impoverished in Bethlehem. Recently OLIVE TREE has helped in the supply of epilepsy drugs for a desperate family in one of the 3 refugee camps in Bethlehem, paid school fees for Christian children, helped a homeless family in Gaza. Regularly OLIVE TREE pays for medical fees, and helps handicapped young folk in several centres in Bethlehem. The list is long and the needs are great.... BUT your purchases enable us to give direct aid where help is most needed. Just ring Juliet, 01505612963, or any of the team and see for yourself. We are happy to take a stall, show our wares and share news of ‘The Holy Land Today’
.....Please build the BRIDGE TO BETHLEHEM this Christmas in a very meaningful way.
