Escape to Plum Village

Arriving from Edinburgh in Bordeaux in July warmed my heart even more than it warmed my skin, and I felt like every part of my body was smiling. Here I was just a bus journey and a train ride away from being met on the platform by the comforting sight of the brown robes of the monastics of Plum Village.

Plum Village is where Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh resides in a community of monastics and lay people living a very simple yet amazingly beautiful life in true Mindfulness.

Thich Nhat Hanh (Thay as he’s affectionately known by his students, which simply means Teacher in Vietnamese) was fi rst introduced to me 6 years previous in the form of a book called “The Heart of Buddha’s Teachings”, a book and a man which would change my life forever.

It felt a little surreal that I was now actually going to the place I had read about so much in so many of his books and heard him talk about on audio books and at his retreat in Nottingham in Summer 2010.

Being in the presence of Thay is not something I can explain in words, but it always makes me feel like I am in the presence of one of our great ascended masters, he is a true living and breathing Buddha.

It’s NOW Mindfulness and Meditation Group is based on the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh and is the Offi cial Community of Interbeing Renfrewshire Sangha. www.itsnowrenfrewshire.wordpress.com
