In The Garden November Project: - Green and White

Sort out that shady spot: dig in plenty of garden compost to improve the soil, and then plant shade- tolerant white plants. They’ll put on a ravishing green-and-white show come spring and summer.

Dicentra ‘Alba’ [Bleeding Heart] has pure white heart-shaped fl owers which dangle from the arching fl ower stems of this delightful plant in late spring and early summer. Dicentra is a hardy plant and although it grows in light shade it will also do well in a sunny border provided the soil stays suffi ciently moist. Plant in autumn or spring and keep sheltered from frosts and strong winds. Clumps of dicentra remain compact for many years and do not like to be disturbed. Instead, try taking root cuttings in late winter..

Astrantia ‘Shaggy’ has pretty, white, pincushion fl owers with a collar of extra long, green tipped petals. The fl owers are excellent for cutting and drying. It is fully hardy, is one of the best pale varieties and copes with damp soil in dappled shade. Plant between autumn and spring and divide large clumps in spring.

Geranium phaeum ‘Album’ is a suitable plant for shady spots and will thrive in damp soil. It produces small, nodding, white fl owers with yellow centres in late spring to early summer.

It is hardy,

trouble-free to grow and makes excellent ground cover.

Plants can be propagated by digging them up and dividing them in spring.
