SWIM PROJECT FOR THE DISABLED

A project that will give young people with physical, sensory or intellectual disabilities the chance to dream of

Paralympics’ swimming glory has been given the London 2012 seal of approval. Swim Links, led by the ASA, has been awarded the London 2012 Inspire mark, which recognises projects that have been inspired by the Olympics. The project will offer

youngsters who are identified at school as having ‘higher swimming ability’ the chance to improve through extra swimming sessions at 20 Swim Links projects at venues across England.

Those who continue to shine can then have their skills officially assessed by the governing body during an ASA County Athlete

Assessment Day to see if they are good enough to make a regional squad.

Sessions started in March and will run until July.

DEBT WRITE OFF WILL HELP POOL

A leisure centre with a top quality pool is set to be thrown a lifeline which would prevent it closing for good. Swindon Council is

considering writing off a debt of up to £610,000 owed to it by the Highworth Recreation Centre Trust.

Last year it was revealed the Highworth Rec – run by the trust – was £558,000 in debt and was under the threat of closure if a solution could not be found quickly. Swindon Council are also set to agree that it will subsidise the Highworth Rec by £105,000 per year, which will be in line with other recreation facilities that have swimming pools across the town.

Harlow Leisurezone, a new sports and leisure centre earmarked as an Olympic 2012 training centre has installed Sill Lighting to light the 25 metre swimming pool, training pool and spectator seating area. The scheme uses up lighting and down lighting to achieve efficiency and glare control.

Mounted on bespoke brackets either side of the swimming pool, are 20 back-to-back pairs of up lights and down lights. Sill’s projectors with 1,000W metal halide lamps, uplight the roof for illumination without veiling glare, while underneath, providing direct lighting are curved plane projectors with 400W metal halide lamps. Emergency lamps have also been fitted to half of the direct projectors so that the facilities remain lit in a power cut.

Both projectors have corrosion resistant die-cast aluminium housings with large heat dissipating

cooling fins. The reflectors are made of 99.98% pure aluminium, chemically polished and anodised with a UV filtering toughened safety glass sealed by a silicone gasket. Built as part of the £50m Harlow Gateway Project which is providing homes, leisure and lifestyle opportunities for residents of Harlow, the £25m leisure centre is
