SWIMATHON SET TO RAISE £2M Swimathon 2011 – the world’s biggest fundraising swimming event – hits over 575 pools across the UK between 8-10 April, when 20,000 swimmers will raise more than £2m for Marie Curie Cancer Care and the Swimathon Foundation. The majority of the funds will help support Marie Curie Nurses who provide free nursing care to cancer patients and those with other terminal illnesses in the place of their choice. The charity expects to provide care to around 29,000 terminally ill patients in the community and in its hospices this year and is the largest provider of hospice beds outside the NHS. Olympic gold medallist and Swimathon President Duncan Goodhew comments: “As we approach a quarter of a century of Swimathons, I’m delighted to report that the 2010 event enjoyed an astonishing 37% rise in entries. And what’s really exciting is that around 2,500 of those who dived in told us that they only started swimming again when they entered Swimathon.
SNOW DELAYS POOL OPENING
Last December’s heavy snowfall has prevented Birmingham’s new £12m swimming pool from opening on time. The Harborne Pool and Fitness Centre was due to open at the end of last year, but now it has been revealed the severe snow and freezing temperatures has put the high profile opening back until April. The pool is the first that Birmingham city council has built for more than 20 years and was approved before the widespread cutbacks were announced. It replaces the previous baths which would have cost too much to repair.

POOL BUILDERS KEEN TO LEARN POOL INSULATION OPTIONS
Seventy two pool building specialists attended the Aquaflex and Thermapool joint seminar on the eve of SPATEX, to hear about innovations into swimming pool insulation systems – and the implications into Part L of the Government’s building regulations.
The theme of the all-day seminar, held in Stevenage, was to learn how to reduce swimming pool heating costs and to understand about the Government’s pool insulation schemes in the form of grants and interest free loans which are available to swimming pool builders looking to insulate correctly. Pool insulation company Thermapool, led by director Nigel Rose, started the morning session by explaining how to gain competitive advantage from the changes in the building regulations. Thermapool is the only Government accredited pool insulation system and at the forefront of the opportunities linked to Part L.
Said Nigel: “I think there is still lots to do in the industry in regard to educating on the benefits of insulating correctly, but we had an excellent attendance and I think the
pool builders saw what an opportunity there is out there.” Swimming pools are constructed in varying soil conditions and in some instances out of the ground. The heat loss through the shell of the pool is therefore dependent upon the ground conditions that surround the pool.
Aquaflex have been keeping a close eye on these developments and are working in conjunction with Thermapool.

ENDLESS POOLS WIN GOVERNMENT CONTRACT IN US
Endless Pools Swimming Machines has been awarded a GSA Federal Supply Schedule Contract to supply custom exercise and therapy swimming pools to United States federal agencies. Endless Pools, provides swimming pools for virtually any application or location. While the costs for indoor pool installations continue to escalate for Government recreation centres and military facilities, Endless Pools says it offers products that are affordable and easy to install in as little as three days. “The modular design of our pools makes customisation much easier, we think Agencies will appreciate this alternative while still meeting their objectives,” says Justin Tillighast, Business Development Manager.
