“From sorting out the pool cover to testing pumps and filter systems, to getting the pool water ‘shocked’ into action, swimming pools now need to be nursed back to life”
He questions some chemical alternatives, but believes they can be used to provide extra support. “We are in an era of choice and as long as consumers are given solid advice and not misled, then traditional and new-wave or alternative options can all be effective,” he says. “However, it is often the case that the chemicals are used to support some of the more modern systems, at various intervals, so I have to say that the traditional approach has something going for it. Of course, we are all looking for the new or improved versions that lower or replace the harsh realities that may be by-products of chlorine, lowering its use if not replacing fully. If you don’t want chlorine for some reason, check that any alternative gives full protection to you and your family. Always follow the instructions on the label for the best and safest results.”
Within its range CPC offers its Aquablanc range of non-chlorine (non-halogen) products,
PoolSan retains a residual level of sanitiser over the colder months
suitable for consumers with sensitivities to chlorine or bromine or those wanting an odour free bathing environment are growing as manufacturers look at longer term trends.
FLOATING CHEMICAL PROVIDES CORRECT EARLY SEASON DOSING Golden Coast is also aware that some pool owners are keen to reduce contact with chemicals yet still need to be sure that at the start of the season, more than other time, the correct dosing is in place. It offers a range of floating chemical dispensers, as well as the self- contained ‘FROG’ – ‘water treatment centre’. The ‘FROG’ does not use electricity and is Installed as an in-line cleaner with no need for extra plumbing. It provides the added advantage of having a ready mixed mineral reservoir capable of holding Trichlor tablets for a low level chlorine back-up. The company’s Swimmer range of more traditional products offers a straightforward approach to getting the pool water prepared. There’s the Swimmer Filter Cleaner which is a pre-season filter cleaner to cleanse the filter media, a Swimmer Algae Destroyer which eliminates any winter build-up of algae in the pool water and finally Swimmer Tidemark Cleaner – inhibiting the potential for metals and minerals naturally found in the water to stain pool interior surfaces and damage pool equipment.
If a whole pool area needs some after-winter attention Golden Coast has ‘303 PFC’, a patio furniture cleaner that safely soaks in and lifts soils and stains so they can be wiped off or rinsed away. Totally safe on any water-safe surface, ‘303 PFC’ uses a proprietary blend of sequester agents, surfactants and hyper-wetting agents and is particularly effective on leaf stains, bird droppings, tree sap, berry juice, wine, barbecue smoke, oil and grease.
TRADITIONAL APPROACH IS THE BEST For Martin Baulcombe, Sales Manager at chemical control equipment specialists Topline, the traditional approach is still best when it comes to opening a pool. “Pools need to be shock dosed with chlorine to make certain that the oxidisation process is kick-started and to ensure sufficient disinfection,” he explains. “A proprietary algaecide should be used to clear any algae that is present. Black algae needs to be

scrubbed off before this is used in order to keep it from returning. All parameters should be tested to ensure that they are within safe levels before swimming commences and a complete water test should be conducted.”
Topline is the country’s only manufacturer of chemical control equipment, on-site chlorine generation equipment and UV systems. When it comes to water quality, the company believes a chemical approach is a tried and tested option that cannot be ignored. “Chemicals have proven results,” continues Baulcombe. “There is a lot of non-traditional treatment emerging onto the market. These still have questions surrounding them, and very few are endorsed by PWTAG or SPATA.” The company also supplies a low pressure UV system, which does not replace the need for chlorine, but can be used alongside it to provide an even stronger defence against bacteria.
ECO-FRIENDLY ALTERNATIVES An increasing number of people who own or use domestic or commercial swimming pools now want to reduce or eliminate the use of chemicals to sanitise the pool. They also want to be sure the pool they swim in for the first time in a season is safe.
Ionisation is not new as an option. It has been around for many years in numerous systems but is now becoming popular and accepted. Aligator Systems, based in Colchester, Essex, has targeted new dealers to use their system which has been upgraded to be fully automated. The ionisation system allows the pool owner to reduce chlorine by up to 80%, sanitising the swimming pool with copper to stop the growth in algae and silver to eliminate bacteria. These two natural elements that keep a pool free from algae
