Automatic pool covers, hot tubs, AFM filters and UV systems might all be in the running. Yet the two which are more likely to make a ‘play off’ in any contest to win this award are heat pumps and one-piece pools. The case for either is impressive. Heat pumps for their part have the advantage of being right at the heart of all the genuine concerns the industry and the consumer has about carbon emissions, fuel costs and general energy efficiency. One clue about how important heat pumps are to the industry will be to see the number of new brands to come into the market over the next couple of years – all probably claiming to perform cheaper, faster and quieter. Whether this will make it any easier for the pool owner to make a choice about which one to buy is another matter but what it will do is re-enforce the fact that the product group is enormously
hat would your choice be if you had to pick a single product group which summed up the best things about innovation and
important to the industry. Look at the last two big European shows in Barcelona and Lyon and just count the number of heat pumps on show. You might even get to triple figures. And as someone said recently, the moment China gets involved in a market in a big way you know there’s something going on of some significance.
So now the case for the fibre glass one-piece pool. In South Africa and Australia its arrival has changed the face of pool building with over seven out of ten new pools using these all-in-one pieces of kit. The pools arrive on site already fitted with all the equipment needed for an instant pool – underwater lights, skimmer, water inlets, plumping, rails and even automatic covers. The colour will never wear away – no repainting, re-surfacing or re-tiling.
So it sort of begs the question why would you opt for anything else?
In the UK, slowly but surely, pool buyers and pool builders are coming to terms with the quality and benefits of fibreglass pools. They certainly appeal from an engineering point of view and it is a major claim to say to a new pool owner that nothing can go wrong. There are two issues of concern however. One is price and some inconsistence in terms of what people are asked to pay. One importer told SPN this month that price is the key now to selling loads more new fibreglass pools. The second point is one of access and getting the pools down twisty lanes into secluded, poorly accessible gardens.
Both one-piece pools and heat pumps feature in this edition of SPN – and both could make serious claims to head any innovation list. Both features might help you to cast your vote.
