ASA OFFERS HELP TO SAVE POOL

Swimmers hope there is still a chance of keeping open a Stoke pool which is set to shut to help save £36m. Stoke City Council has decided to close Tunstall Pool, along with the baths at Shelton, to cut £162,000 from its 2011/12 budget. But users of the facility believe it could still have a future if alternative funding can be found to keep it open. The Amateur Swimming Association, the UK’s national governing body for swimming, is due to hold talks with the city council to act as a “catalyst and facilitator” to ensure suitable facilities are available. The city council has said that it will consider offers to take over the pool, although it claims that £360,000 of maintenance work needs to be carried out and it can’t afford to do it because of cuts.

£11M POOL FIND HAS BEEN ‘USED UP’ An £11m fund put aside for Shrewsbury’s ageing swimming pool has already been spent on other projects because of cash pressures, Shropshire Council confirmed it had spent the money – which had previously been set aside exclusively to revamp or rebuild the pool at the Quarry. Eileen Sandford, a former mayor of Shrewsbury said it was unfair that the money had not been protected for the swimming pool. She said: “About £11m was handed over by the borough and it was specifically for the pool. It was put to one side for the build and we had done the consultation and then unitary arrived and everything stopped.” Mrs Sandford claimed bosses were “wasting money” at the present pool complex on huge heating bills.

AQUAFLEX AND NATIONAL LEISURE LINK UP ON ‘PROFESSIONAL’ THEME

National Leisure’s member companies took advantage of an offer to have a closer look at Aquaflex’s products and facilities at a specially organised technical seminar. The theme of the two day event was professionalism, an area where Aquaflex know they stand out. Angie Bowers from National Leisure contacted Aquaflex and suggested her members might appreciate seeing Aquaflex’s product range and she was proved right with a high turnout. Delegates were shown how pre-tailored liners are made, from planning to final welding and were able to examine the new Pro-Tech 4 liner materials with four layers of highly protective lacquer to combat the combined forces of abrasion, sunlight and chemical attack. Quality was also in evidence in the winter, safety and solar covers manufactured by Aquaflex. A tour of the factory showed off the machinery that ensures each Aquaflex liner and cover are inch perfect.

Also renowned for their Alkorplan on-site lining and Abrisud all weather pool enclosure, the delegates were taken to a display pool where John Crossman demonstrated the strength of the Abrisud by climbing on to the top of the cover and using it as his stage! The pool also boasts Alkorplan on-site lining. The pool is retro fitted

with Thermapool insulation. The event ended with a short talk about products new to the Aquaflex stable including the Zeoclere filter media; which in addition to its filtration performance, strips metals and ammonia from pool water, and Jolly Gel flocculent. Another newcomer was the wind resistant solar cover edging designed for deck level and horizon pools. Aquaflex also spoke of their recommendation for using Thermapool as an energy saving insulation for all liner pools in view of the new Part L regulations.

FILM STAR SUPPORT IN FIGHT TO KEEP DARTFORD POOL OPEN

A Kent based swimming instructor battling to keep her school pool

from closure has a film star supporting her campaign.

Jenny Christmas is thrilled Pirates of the Caribbean star Mackenzie Crook, 39, who used to attend Sutton-at-Hone Primary School in Dartford, has offered to help in the battle against the pool’s closure.

The pool, which opened in 1975, can only be used for another two years before it fails to meet modern day standards.

Jenny says the star’s support will help give the campaign a boost in its bid to raise £80,000 for refurbishments.

The Office actor who used the pool when he was a pupil said: “I had

a really good time at the school. “Sutton-at-Hone was an idyllic time for me and the swimming pool was part of that experience – it was a great part of school life.” Jenny who has worked at the school for 10 years, has applied for £60,000 from Big Lottery Funding but is appealing for support from local businesses and residents for the remainder.

She is also selling cardboard bricks for five pounds each to symbolise the rebuilding of the new pool. Money raised will be spent on new materials, including non slip rubber flooring, surround heating, a refurbished changing area and disabled access.
