took one up the Thames and floated it up to the site. It does add to the cost and always has to be factored into the contract

“The market is good and I think we are going to see one-piece pools forge themselves a bigger percentage of the domestic market here in the UK.”

ECONOMY OF SCALE HELPS LEISURE POOLS WITH PRICING STRUCTURE Economy of scale is a phrase which comes up a lot when Verdun Bailey talks about the Australian made Leisure Pools one-piece pools. Leisure Pools Europe is part of the Ambassador Leisure Group, the largest online business selling swimming pool products in the UK. It also includes 1st-direct.com, the mail order and online supplier of swimming pool products, spas and chemicals. The Leisure Pools Europe one-piece business is now fully operational in the UK and has started as Verdun says “putting pools in the ground”. The quality one-piece pools are imported from Australia where the brand name is respected and hugely successful in terms of the number of pool installations. There is certainly a new confidence about the quality of one-piece pools and the Leisure Pools which arrive in the UK are all the result of an extensive research and development programme, which includes each pool receiving a six layer fibreglass swimming pool construction process including a chemical resistant and UV stabilised gel coat, structured layers of fibre glass and resin and finally a resin flowcoat to seal the whole swimming pool structure.

Yet there’s another factor in the confidence behind Leisure Pools in Europe. It is a price issue where Leisure Pools are confident they can not only be price competitive but offer pools at what Verdun, Managing Director of Ambassador Pools, calls ‘the right price’.

“We bring them into the UK 20 at a time and this clearly lowers the price. If you are bringing pools in one at a time then the freight charges are enormous and a problem. We are able to offer this economy of scale and take a view of the market and rather than making say 35% by selling two pools, we might prefer to make a 15% margin by selling 22!

“I think one-piece pools will gradually continue to increase to sell more and more in the UK specially if they can be sold at the right price and that will be an important factor.

“I don’t think a pricing structure which sees these pools priced at £30,000 is viable. We are working hard to get the price down and with the economy of scale we are confident we can do it – and I am sure we will sell lots of pool.” He says that the Leisure Pools which are acknowledged as so successful in Australia have also started to sell well in other parts of Europe – Belgium for example has performed ‘amazingly well’.

Like others, he is aware of access problems

No one is disclosing any identities but one recent one-piece pool installation for a leading sportsman where speed of installation and quality were both key, was high profile.

When Derek Huxley, Managing Director of European Pool & Spa Ltd, was approached by a well known sportsman to create a stunning indoor pool quickly and without any compromise on quality, he opted for a Riviera pool.

“It was an easy choice as it is the smartest and most high spec one piece pool in the market place,” says Derek. “The customer asked for a pool designed first and foremost for relaxation for his young family. The 10m long Riviera Classic Rom with Roman End and the option of a built in roller shutter cover and constant depth, coupled with its speed of installation, fitted the bill perfectly.”

The pool includes filters and pumps and

and the difficult in getting the pools into back garden sites might deter potential customers. “It is a problem in the UK not just to get access to a site but to move the pools around the country.”

The Riviera one-piece pool has always been the market leader in one-piece pools and the addition of two new models this year could enhance that status. The aptly named Linear features a full width step section allowing entry to the pool from one end whilst the ultra smart Kara features side entry steps.

Optional extras include the addition of source pools and water channels connecting them to the main pool in the form of a waterfall. Riviera has introduced the infinity edge system allowing straight sides to be removed and the overflow effect of an infinity pool to be added. The latest models are available in a light grey and dark grey granite colour as well as the original white, sea blue, sand and papyrus.
