NEW PATENT CHANGES EUROPE’S VIEW ON POOL DESIGN
A revolutionary patent which is claimed will change the concept of swimming pools is available now on the UK market. The Piscine Biodesign technology from Italy is based on the excavation and the lining of it with a waterproof layer which is unique in its elasticity and durability. These layers are superior to those used in traditional pools for two main reasons: the material’s elasticity and its resistance to
chlorinated products, UV and ice. Ground movements do not cause any damage to the waterproofing due to its elasticity. Another aspect which ensures a long product.
Biodesign Pools, created by API ITALIA, has been in operation for over 40 years as a market leader in the field of monumental fountains, artificial lakes and biological water treatment systems, all without the use of chlorinated products.
SCP’s ‘showcase’ event for its customers is proving to be one of the most successful in the specialist trade’s calendar. Over 600 people attended the three day event at the Copthorne Hotel in Effingham Park, near Gatwick Airport with 30 of the company’s suppliers taking stands. The event is a traditional one dating back to the Nor-Cal days and is hugely popular with SCP customers from the UK and abroad. “It is a special event,” says SCP director David Mathers.
“The idea is basically we show our customers where we are going for this year. We show our existing ranges and feature new products. It sets out to show what we can do for our customers but also gives
them a unique chance to have one to one’s with the suppliers and ask them the sort of questions you don’t get time for at a normal trade show. It is the one to one experience which really matters.” The SCP event is geared specially to give customers time to spend with suppliers and manufacturers. “When we visit a trade show such as SPATEX there isn’t really the time on the stand to go into great detail. SPATEX provides us with the chance to meet new customers but our ‘showcase’ event is different. There’s room for both of them in our calendar,” added David. The event also includes a series of dinners for customers over the three days.

The market for Biodesign Pools is expanding across Europe not only for private pools but large commercial and hotel pools.
They are built using a four stage process. The first is a fabric to protect the liner from the excavation; the second is the waterproof layer, whose high elasticity can withstand any movement of the ground without causing leaks within the pool. Next are the two layers of natural marble stone mixed with resin: the first a coarse finish and the second the final smooth pool surface. This finish is shaped on special reinforcement netting and is joined together by mixing the granules of marble with special resins.
The final result is a pool completely handmade, unique in shape and elegance, built with respect for the environment in mind, not only during construction but also during use, thanks to the specific methods of cleaning and disinfection which produce minimum pollution.
The construction process provides a natural marble resin finish on a structural netting system for strength, all laid over an elastic waterproof liner. The result is a pool with a large structural soundness, an elastic waterproofing guarantee superior to any traditional swimming pool, and available in a wide range of spectacular colours.
