POOL PROJECTS HIT HARD AS COUNCILS MAKE CUTS In other meetings:

The new Hanovia UV system at Riverside leisure Centre in Exeter

RIVERSIDE STICKS WITH HANOVIA UV AFTER 16 YEARS OF SUCCESS

Riverside Leisure Centre in Exeter was the first leisure centre in the UK to install a UV system to treat its pool water. That was back in 1994, when the centre had just undergone a refurbishment and a Hanovia UV system was chosen to replace an ozone system.

The UV system performed so well for the subsequent 16 years, and was still performing well when the time came for an upgrade last year. An upgrade was only necessary because parts for the old UV unit were no longer available, but the centre, operated by Parkwood Community Leisure on behalf of Exeter City Council, didn’t think twice about replacing it with another Hanovia system.

Centre Manager Phil Roebuck said, “We only add between 0.5 and 1.5ppm chlorine for residual disinfection, depending on how busy the pool is. The pool water is much clearer than if we were using chlorine on its own. Also, because UV destroys any combined chlorines produced by the residual chlorination, the atmosphere around the pool is very pleasant, with none of the unwelcome smells or eye irritations normally associated with indoor pools. We never have any complaints about the water or air quality, and as far as I’m concerned, no news is good news.” Jeremy Wright, Parkwood Community Leisure’s General Manager, was complimentary about the Hanovia system: “I can confirm

we often get complimentary remarks from pool users about the quality of the water and air around the pool.” Phil Roebuck added: “The fact that we have all these benefits without staff having to constantly monitor the system is also a major advantage. They all have other duties, so knowing that they can rely on the system to work away in the background is reassuring. A member of staff simply checks the Hanovia system’s control panel once a day and logs the parameters to record usage and condition – that’s it.” The replacement UV unit installed at Riverside is used for the main leisure pool and treats up to 280 m3/hour. Automatic wipers keep the quartz sleeve housing the UV lamp clean, so the only regular maintenance is an annual service at which the UV lamp is changed – a simple operation that is carried out by on-site staff. A smaller Hanovia UV system is also used to treat water in the learner pool. UV has become the preferred water treatment method for public and commercial indoor pools in the UK. It is also supplied for many pool refurbishments – the compact design of UV systems making this a relatively simple upgrade. Since 1994 Hanovia has supplied over 600 UV systems to the UK pool market.

Over £50m of swimming pool projects were cut from local authority budgets in the first two months of 2011 as councils met to make budget savings. Renovations have been ‘put on ice’, new pool projects cancelled and pools and leisure centres closed as the impact of cuts became a reality at heated and emotional pre-budget council meetings all over the country. The Treasury’s 25% departmental budget cuts programme looks to have had a big impact on swimming and swimming pools, which were always thought to be one of the area’s worst hit by enforced public sector savings.

Among the projects to face the axe is the Greenbank Leisure Centre, in Civic Way, Swadlincote, Derbyshire – which has had a £650,000 Sport England grant to rebuild its pool withdrawn. A spokesman for the local authority said: “South Derbyshire District Council applied for £649,000 of funding to refurbish the Greenbank Leisure Centre. The scheme is being administered by Sport England but the money was due to come from Government departments.”

Exeter City Council is to ask local residents to help run swimming pools and provide administrative help rather than see the pools close. Other local authorities are looking at this ‘help your local pool’ scheme. North Somerset councillors gave the green light to slashing more than £18m from the authority’s budget and agreed to cancel a number of swimming pool projects. One councillor said facilities like swimming pools were an ‘inevitable target’. Oxford City Council called for Temple Cowley Pool to remain open for at least four years while a new pool for the city was built. The original plan was to sell the pool to pay for the new £8.5m swimming complex alongside Blackbird Leys Leisure Centre. Nottinghamshire City Council said it had tried to keep all the swimming facilities open but could not afford to renovate three city pools which would have to close.

In Newcastle councillors said it was deciding which pools had to close and which could be kept open. “We don’t have the funds to please everyone,” the council confirmed.

NEW MULTI-USE FLOATING LOUNGE AVAILABLE FROM JETSTREAM UK

A new ‘Floating Lounge’ from German manufacturer’s uwe Jetstream, is now on the UK market as the first system which combines to produce a wellness, fitness and rehabilitation station for swimming pools. It is available for new swimming pools and refurbishments and suitable for both residential and commercial use. It is being marketed in the UK by Jetstream UK. The ‘lounge’ is the brainchild of Nik Schweiger, the respected German interior designer and was inspired by his own swimming pool experiences and has been fully backed during its development and manufacturing stage by uwe Jetstream.

It offers a range of functions from massage therapy and exercises through to aquatic workouts – all at the touch of a button. The high powered counter-current unit can move up to 18 litres of water every second against the swimmer and can be adjusted to provide almost Olympic

swimming standards. The benefits in the market place are known to be a system which can provide extensive work out and at the same time be adapted as a hydrotherapy system with massage jets adapted and integrated to suit the owners’ wishes. The whole Floating Lounge is delivered pre assembled.
