gas, electric heater or heat pump usage. Where solar heating is used, it is possible to invest in only half the amount of panels. Low maintenance costs and energy
efficiency through the use of heat pumps continues to be a priority at community pools throughout the UK. Heat pumps remain high on the agenda for such savings. The launch of a new generation of
swimming pool climate control systems is a special event, with arguably 14 years since the last real technological breakthrough. Throughout Europe, heat pumps have been an
accepted system and technology for between 20 and 30 years and statistics are more easily available than in the UK where they have been selling from a very low base. The Government’s target of 15% of energy to
be derived from renewables by 2020 assumes significant growth of ground and air source heat pumps in order to meet this commitment. The market value for both ground and air
source heat pumps in the residential, commercial, public and industrial sectors is forecast at more than £50m in 2010 which, when added to installation costs of about £13m, gives an overall estimate of around £65m. The Gemini system from Heatstar is a direct response to increasing fuel prices and the escalating focus and demand for sources of renewable energy. The Gemini provides all the usual energy
efficiencies associated with a heat pump dehumidification system with heat reclaim available to both air and pool water. However, the Gemini also incorporates a built-
in fresh air source heat pump boiler, which extracts energy from the outside air and uses this to heat the pool room air and pool water directly. The combined Gemini hybrid provides the end
client with an easy and convenient solution to the desire to accommodate renewable energy technology, without the need or high associated costs of installing a ground source heat pump boiler or externally positioned air source heat pump boilers. Bob White of Heatsaver says the simplest, most
cost effective method of reducing CO2 emissions is to use a molecular liquid pool cover, which is
cheap to install and run but offers a high return on investment. For most pools the cost of the dosing equipment should be amortised within a few months, with the cost of the Heatsavr liquid funded directly from savings. Having established its credentials in the
commercial market, more residential pool owners are realising Heatsavr’s benefits. He accepts for most residential pool owners, who only use their pool for an hour a day, a conventional cover may perform better, a liquid pool cover is great for those that prefer the aesthetics of an apparently uncovered pool and who would normally leave a
conventional cover off for long periods, or for irregular shaped pools where a conventional cover would simply be impractical. Continuing its search for energy
saving options for pool owners, from solar power to heat pumps, Golden Coast is leads the drive to promote alternative energy sources in the swimming pool industry. The company offers three energy efficiency
products: Sunburst Solar Tubes; DEL Solar Powered Covers and Calorex Heat Pumps. Golden Coast’s own ‘Sunburst’ solar energy
system is one of the most efficient ways to heat swimming pools, by capturing free energy from the sun. ‘Sunburst’ uses evacuated solar tube collector technology, the insulating efficiency of which creates a vacuum around the internal copper heat pipe. This can result in temperatures of up to 250°C being reached inside the copper pipe, far more than traditional black solar panels. As the UK’s sole distributor of DEL covers, Golden Coast supports the entire range of solar powered units to enable pools users to reduce their carbon footprint at the same time as saving on energy costs.
Although technically not powered directly by
the sun but using heat from the atmosphere, Golden Coast has added to its 30-years of experience in heat pump technology for swimming pools and wet leisure facilities by teaming up with Calorex, Europe’s leading manufacturer of ‘Air Source’ and ‘Ground Source’ heat pumps. The company is so confident in the product that
it has installed an air-source heat pump system in part of its office and warehouse premises, demonstrating the efficiency of the system, which, in its case, provides all Golden Coast’s hot water requirements and space heating. A revolutionary new simple ‘do-it-yourself’ put
anywhere solar swimming pool heater has also been introduced by Golden Coast. ‘SolarPro’ can be installed on any above-ground pool to harness the power of the sun to raise and maintain pool
