‘ENTERING 2011 THERE ARE INDUSTRY ISSUES WE NEED RESOLVED’

After two recent SPATA seminars, BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes stresses the benefits of belonging to an association that provides industry standards and upholds a Code of Ethics

F

irstly, I would like to wish readers a Happy New Year. 2010 was a challenging year for many people / businesses and those that adapted and looked for advice and support from our offices may have prospered the most. There is a variety of business help out there and BISHTA / SPATA members have been given access to a wide range of them. The recent SPATA Seminars (which were sponsored by JNC Solutions) are just one example of where businesses can help our industry. An article about their job costing for construction and maintenance integrated with a Sage package i featured in this issue. Other guest speakers came from Independent Financial

Services (UK) Ltd (IFS) to discuss the value of independent financial advice and they have offered a free financial health check for BISHTA and SPATA members. TaxAssist and Baker Tilly provided invaluable insights into taxation matters in Loughborough and Guildford respectively where members were given invaluable tips on how to make best use of a wealth of opportunities available to them.

The seminars and weekly e-newsletters have worked very well in providing up to date information as part of a communications strategy to keep members in the loop about what is going on. Some issues that affect our industry remain partially unsolved, such as the specific interpretations of the Building Regulations Part L. Rest assured, there are ongoing discussions within the industry and with key stakeholders such as Building Control Officers and the Department for Communities and Local Government to get definitive answers to some of the remaining questions. I will be keeping you all up to date as this situation progresses. Having recently attended the Elite Spas Ltd annual conference to speak about the role of BISHTA, there were some timely reminders from the audience about the need to continually raise the profile of BISHTA with consumers. With Issy Rickards Sanger in her new role as BISHTA Chair and with Kevin Rickards Sanger being a valued member of the BISHTA Technical Committee, this was an opportunity to talk to some of the companies that are not yet BISHTA members about the many benefits of Trade Association membership. The benefits of belonging to an Association that provides industry standards and upholds a Code of Ethics is very important, especially in light of the misdemeanours of the Trade Price Group. Member benefits were acknowledged as valuable and the key challenge for BISHTA is to ensure that consumers realise just

how hard BISHTA members are working at providing great quality products and services. I am looking forward to meeting a lot of industry colleagues at SPATEX this year which I am pleased to report is a sell out. This promises to be a weekend of great opportunity to profile our industry. I am very grateful to all the exhibitors for their support of the event which I know will be a great success as a result of the tenacious hard work and commitment from Michele Bridle and Sandy Crockford, supported by the SPATEX directors. With the SPATA and BISHTA Awards combining this year, there should be a lot of media interest and reporting. SPATA is celebrating its 50th anniversary (including its inception as the Association of Swimming Pool Contractors) while BISHTA celebrates its 10th anniversary. If you would like to attend this black tie affair, please check with the office to see if there are any tickets left, they are priced at just £69.95 + VAT. Once again I’d like to say a huge thank you to all of the sponsors for supporting this event. During the past year, there have been a series of articles detailing the work of BSPF, SPATA, BISHTA, PIP and SPATEX and from now on, these particular pages will contain interviews with our members, together with news updates, so please make sure you submit your releases to let your colleagues and the rest of the industry know what you are doing. Discussions will be ongoing this year with colleagues throughout Europe on the proposed European standards for domestic pools and the current business plan to include spas and hot tubs as part of the work programme. Regular updates will be provided to members as and when there are any significant changes. Have a great 2011 and remember to make sure that you and your business are kept up to speed with what is happening in the industry by visiting SPATEX 2011.

Our thanks also go to the SPATA and BISHTA Awards 2011 Sponsors who include:
