RELIABILITY KEEPS UV AHEAD
More swimming pools large and small are switching to UV systems based on their reliability and impressive success rates. UV is also beginning to be accepted without question as effective against chlorine resistant micro- organisms such as cryptosporidium and being able to provide a comfort factor when it comes to bacteria free water

he task to convince pool operators of the best way to deal with water treatment in swimming pools is not a sprint – it’s a marathon.
Ultraviolet (UV) systems are now firmly ahead in the race to provide consistent bacteria free water and more pleasant swimming conditions throughout the UK. While UV is not the cheapest option the last four years has seen a record number of systems introduced to commercial and local authority pools as more people accept the enviable safety and success record of the systems. Slow to be accepted but now a firm favourite the UV system has won respect for its technological solutions to water treatment issues.
Mark Oldman who has, through his experience of fitting hundreds of Aqua System UV machines, become something of an accepted expert says: “I’ve never known anyone to be disappointed or regret putting in a UV system. A lot of options for pool cleaning systems come and go. Ozone did it for a while to a certain degree. But now it’s very clear to me that the system which is here to last and which gives the best results and the best financial return is UV.”
Acceptance of UV systems was at one time difficult. Often pool managers opted for less expensive short term options. But the story of the development of UV sales has been one of slow approval and respect. It is clear that there is still

confusion about the link between UV and the use of chlorine.
Yet the fact remains UV is a worldwide phenomenon.
One of the determining reasons behind the success of the ultra violet light systems is that once installed it has a high degree of reliability and success.
Tony Leigh, Technical Director from UV specialists atg says: “Bathers need to be kept safe, and pool operators also want to make the experience as pleasant as possible, whilst balancing the commercial needs of their business.” UV is now seen as the modern solution. The problem is however an age old one. When bathers use chlorinated swimming pools, a variety of chemicals are introduced in the process. Athletes using the pool for laps or exercise will sweat, and children using the pool for recreation often introduce urea into the pool water. Not in-frequently, pool hygiene is poor and those entering a pool have not showered to remove sun creams or hair gel.
