ROCHDALE’S EIGHT LANE POOL UNDER WAY Work has started to bring an eight-lane 25m swimming pool and learner pool with moveable floor to Rochdale town centre. Contractors Willmott Dixon, based in Oldham, are now getting the site ready for construction, which started at the beginning of this year. Plans for the centre include, as well as a sports hall, thermal and fitness suites, dance studios, a youth gym and a car park with over 160 spaces, which will be free for the centre’s customers. In the coming weeks the ground will be prepared for the centre’s foundations, an access road will be built and a drainage system installed.

SWIMMING

PARTICIPATION DROPS New participation figures published by Sport England paint a mixed picture of grassroots sport, with a decline in swimming. Overall, the slow increase in participation numbers seen over the past five years continues, with 6,938,000 people now taking part in sport at least three times a week. Today’s Active People Survey results show regular participation is now 123,000 closer to the Government’s aim to get one million people playing more sport by 2012/13.

Of real concern, however, is the continued under-

performance of five of the top seven participation sports, including the only sports with more than two million weekly participants – swimming and football. For these – the challenge is to arrest the drop in participation outside the club structures where they have traditionally focused most of their attention.

FLEXFLOORING INSTALLS SPLASH PAD SURFACE AT GHELUVELT PARK

Built in honour of those lost in the First World War, Gheluvelt Memorial Park recently received over £800,000 of lottery funding allowing for improvements to the play area and war memorial, as well as the construction of a new water play feature. The water play feature was installed by water display specialists Ustigate, who subcontracted the installation of the rubber surfacing to Flexflooring Ltd (formerly Poolsafe Ltd). The project at Gheluvelt Park in Worcester provided some unique challenges for Flexflooring Ltd, given the inclusion of numerous rock formations and an undulating surface. In a change from the more usual choice of blues and yellows often chosen for splash pads, the colours used within this installation include natural blends of white, beige and grey Andalucia, white and yellow Beach and an area of 100% brown.

The overall effect, along with the rocks and jets is stunning.

Since its grand opening the Splash pad has been open to the public every day from 11am till 6pm. Local councillor Roger Knight commented: “I think it’s a wonderful facility. I came down during the

testing programme and spoke to some mums and saw the children enjoying themselves.”
