Hampshire is an example of the difference better disability access to pools has made. New Forest District Council purchased the BluOne portable pool lift from Dolphin Mobility to encourage more disabled people to take the plunge. New Forest District Council Equalities Officer Helena Renwick said the feedback from swimmers using the pool lift was so encouraging that lifts had been added at other pools.
“It has made a dramatic difference to the way we offer better services to those who are disabled or lack mobility but who want to enjoy the pool and swimming facilities. We want more disabled people to enjoy the benefits of swimming and have invested in this modern, lightweight and easy-to-use pool lift with great success. Swimming gives better health and mobility to disabled people and therefore it is very important for them to participate in this activity.”
Many leisure centres have introduced a programme of disability awareness training for staff to address such issues, and ensure staff are aware of the needs of disabled people. As the DDA is not a compliance-based act, there are no inspectors checking buildings to see how well they meet standards. As such, it will be disabled people themselves who will make a complaint against an organisation if they believe that a service provider has not met their needs. The first cases following the final implementation of the DDA are just beginning to be taken to court now.
One of AstralPool’s fields of experience is the design and manufacture of pool access equipment for mobility impaired. Ladders were the very first articles AstralPool made over 30 years ago when they began producing pool equipment.
The production equipment used to shape and work the high quality stainless steel tube featured in so many pool access products is state of the art and amongst the largest in the world. This manufacturing excellence enables AstralPool to offer the widest range of pool access products for commercial, specialist and residential pools.
Available through Suntrap, the ‘Pal’ is a completely portable lift which can be easily moved to a pool edge
Specialist products for use particularly in hydrotherapy pools include the Waterlift, the Wellbike and a Portable Pool Lift. The Waterlift entails the reinvention of the current assisted pool access systems, being halfway between conventional steps and complex access systems for the disabled. Combining the best of both, it provides the solution to comfortably get in and out of the pool with no effort whatsoever.
The design is based on that of a conventional set of steps but with only one single step which moves vertically allowing the bather to enter and leave the pool with no physical effort. The step is controlled by push-buttons, to ascend and descend, which are accessible both from in and out of the pool. The pool lift is designed for the mobility impaired. This is a new device to make it easier to transfer people with disabilities to and from the pool and changing areas safely.
Easy to use and operate with many safety features the chair enables the operator to lower and raise the swimmer in and out of the pool with minimum effort. This is a very easy to use portable pool lift offering no stress for the swimmer, no more uncomfortable slings or
