DERBY’S £1M POOL OPENS Derby’s first new swimming pool for 25 years has opened – three years after its predecessor was condemned and closed. Community members fought for a pool to remain at Gayton Junior School and even went to court to secure its future. They were rewarded as the £1m pool was opened by Olympic swimmer Ross Davenport. He was accompanied by former Olympic swimmer Mel Marshall, now head coach of City of Derby Swimming Club. She said: “There is a desperate need for more quality pools to be built so that there are enough swimming hours for everyone including learners and competitive swimmers.” The 7.5m by 17.25m pool will be managed on behalf of Derby City Council by Gayton Pool Ltd, a subsidiary of Lonsdale Swimming and Sports Trust.
POOL TIMETABLES ON AN I-PHONE APP More swimming pools are being urged to make timetables available to the public on free i-Phone applications. A number of councils have made the move to offer downloadable opening times with great success. One of the latest is in the Bexley and Dartford area of Kent where those with an i-Phone can have pool timetables via a free downloadable application from leisure centres at Crook Log, Erith, Fairfield and Sidcup. Matthew Houghton Sports Development Manager for Bexley and Dartford says: “By having our pool timetables as downloadable apps it raises awareness of the leisure centres in the local area and encourages people to become more active through swimming.”

TINTOMETER GROUP ACQUIRES KITTIWAKE WATER TEST KIT BUSINESS
The Tintometer Group of Companies, the manufacturer and distributor of the Lovibond water analysis and colour measurement technology, has acquired the Kittiwake Development Ltd water test kit business. The company said the acquisition confirms its long-term commitment to the expansion of its core areas of water and colour analysis.
Kittiwake’s range of products will complement Tintometer’s current portfolio and quicken the expansion of the Lovibond brand in the industrial water testing market. Typically the Kittiwake range is used by field engineers and facilities managers for water testing of such applications as boiler water, cooling water, pools and spas and microbiological testing.

business will enable us to focus even greater energy and resources on the areas Tintometer and Lovibond are famous for; high quality instrumentation, reagents and ancillary equipment for water analysis. SOLAR INDUSTRY SET FOR EXPANSION
A new European Union report says the next five years could see a dramatic development of the solar industry throughout member states. The growing photovoltaic industry has spawned thousands of jobs for people who design, make, and install solar systems for homes and businesses. But smaller solar thermal business is also set to boom in Europe, according to a new report. Solar thermal products come in all sizes – from rooftop panels that absorb the sun’s rays to heat swimming pools and provide hot water for homes to huge mirror arrays that heat liquids to create steam to drive electricity- generating turbines. It’s still a small industry, with swimming pool products accounting for 73% of the industry in 2009. But that’s poised to change, as property developers start to make wider use of improving technology.
