Now, here we were in the best hotel south of 32nd Street and that same crazy-eyed look began to glint like some wild mare with a burr caught under her saddle. But soon, thankfully, the elevator whirred us back down to the lobby and she extricated herself as fast as humanly possible.

Villagers who look like they’re trying out for a role on “Friends.” I see more “Rachels” and “Rosses” here than ever.

The din is resounding. The fare is enjoyable.

“Another Bloody?” the bartender asks. Hmm, my family is sequestered for hours, I have nowhere to be and I am not oper- ating heavy machinery. “Sure!”

It was a bloody-good brunch, though I quickly walk it all off, heading west through the village and then north into Chelsea. I stop at the Chelsea Market and encourage you to do the same if you’ve never been to this Anthropologie-meets- Old New York landmark, chock full of cheese shops and coffee shops, sea food markets and cute cafes. Continuing my usual tradition, I stop into Amy’s Breads and order some cheddar-y cheese bread and a coffee, sipping, nibbling, reading and relaxing for awhile.

By mid-afternoon, I am back in Soho. I am thirsty. I want a beer.

Though the neighborhood offers almost any kind of bar, some seem a bit too dear for me, or too trendy, that is, until I discov- er Shorty’s 32 on Prince Street - my new favorite hang. 32 as in there are just thirty- two seats at this postage stamp of a place. Shorty’s, I presume, since Chef/co- owner Josh Eden is diminutive in stature.

There’s no shortness of talent in the hands of this protégé of Jean Georges Vongerichten. His abbreviated menu fea- tures comfort food classics; a moody little haunt where you’ll want to order the chicken, knowing it will be pan fried to a crispy bliss-giving divineness.

A place to get heavenly mac-and-cheese and hearty short ribs. Oh, those short ribs!

I take another bite while washing it down with a crisp Brooklyn Pale Ale.

A gent next to me strikes up conversation at that eight stool micro bar and for the next couple hours we commiserate over brews and laughs.
