and a dedicated children's gallery. The museum opened its Syd and Sharon Martin Wing in September 2009, a flexi- ble space large enough to accommodate major, nationally touring exhibitions.

The historic Mercer Museum is on sched- ule a 13,000 square-foot expansion of its own in spring of 2011. The expansion will include a 3,500 square-foot climate- controlled, state-of-the-art exhibition gallery making the museum one of the few venues in the area able to host trav- eling exhibitions and collections from a wide variety of sources such as the Smithsonian. The additional space will also feature a 1,000 square-foot multi- flex learning center to accommodate pro- grams, workshops and classes.

“Green” elements will be incorporated into its construction, including a Green roof, water-conserving bathroom fixtures, radiant heat concrete flooring slabs, and recycled content wall panels in its new exhibit gallery. Permeable paving will be used for the upgraded parking facilities, and adjacent to that, the grounds will be improved with a rain garden using native plants of the region. The new wing’s inau- gural exhibit, “A World of Things: The Mercer Museum A to Z” will highlight sel- dom seen objects from the museum’s vast collection.
