The area is a hotbed for history, with plen- ty of Civil War historic sites, museums and markers. Cumberland Valley has been a major military site over the years, too, with historic attractions like the Carlisle Barracks,
built in 1757; the New
Cumberland Army Depot (a World War I structure); and the Naval Supply Depot (from WWII). The military has played an integral role over the years in shaping
Cumberland Valley, and continues to do so today.

Another local event venue with historic ties is the Allenberry Resort Inn and Playhouse. After flourishing into the 1960s and acting as the hub of this vibrant downtown, the theater entered a state of decline in the ‘70s until its eventually closing in 1986. However, the theater reopened as an anchor to a changing and revitalized downtown in the ‘90s thanks to the Carlisle Regional Performing Arts Center, Inc. Through fund raising efforts and thou- sands of hours donated by a skilled vol- unteer workforce, this venue has since been restored to its original brilliance.
Kings Gap mansion, built around 1908, is a meeting venue inside of a state park. Sitting astride South Mountain, it offers a panoramic view of the Cumberland Valley along with 16 miles of hiking trails. Working through the Nature Conservancy,
