Actor Jeremy Piven is doing his very best Ari Gold impres- sion while standing in front of the newly opened Trump Soho hotel and condominiums one warm Saturday after- noon in New York City.

Like his silver tongued Entourage uber-agent counterpart, Piven is decked out resplendently in a form-fitting charcoal gray suite and monochromatic silk shirt; donned in stylish aviator sunglasses and casually checking his Rolex watch like - well, like Ari Gold.

Anywhere else on the East Coast and maybe I’d be caught off guard by such a Hollywood-like scene. The fact that this is the Trump Soho makes such a star sighting all the less surprising to me.

What’s infinitely more visually shocking is my own get-up.

You see, the day before departing on this trip the power in my town had been knocked out by a sudden violent storm and hadn’t come on since. No electricity means no septic, or well water system at The Alan abode. Thus, with a two- day beard, a sticky facial sheen and an old baseball cap perched over my greasy locks, I appeared very much the unkempt yang to Piven’s well-quaffed yin.

Throwing my car keys to the valet, I quickly ushered in each of my equally-as-messy family members, enduring disdain- ful stares from a few well-heeled guests while checking-in, wanting nothing more than a hot shower and a shave.

“You’re Hired!” A NYC weekend at The Donald’s New Place

78 November  December 2010

It was an interesting way to start our Big Apple weekend... I cannot get enough of NYC.

There once was a time when I went for long stretches (years in fact) without visiting; where “New York City” once meant nothing-but-Midtown to me, and dining out consist- ed of soggy shrimp at Bubba Gump’s or overpriced spaghet- ti at Sardi’s, I now trek there almost every month. I’ve discov- ered the allure of the island’s many neighborhoods, and I have come to enjoy the culinary delights high and low, east and west, haute and simple at some of the country’s best restaurants.
