Auburn, MA — PI (Physik Instrumente) has intro- duced a series of ultrasonic piezo linear positioning stages that are compact, quiet, and operate on low amounts of power. The U-521 series provides motion with high
resolution, as well as an extremely wide dynamic range from microns per second to hundreds of mil- limeters per second. Due to their low power requirements, the ultrasonic motors can also be integrated into mobile measuring and medical devices. A significant advantage over magnetic drive
technologies (such as the voice-coils, brushless and three-phase motors also offered by PI) is the self- locking principle: Once the motor reaches a target position, it acts like a ceramic brake and locks the platform into place, providing extreme longterm sta- bility at zero driving current and heat generation. With the U-521 the company has added a
compact linear stage to its portfolio with dimen- sions of 35 × 35 × 15 mm (1.38 x 1.38 x 0.59 in.), which is similar in size to a matchbox. The compact design allows easy integration, even when space is limited. In addition to their speeds of up to 200 mm/sec (7.87 in/s), the low inertia, direct drive — no rotating parts — allows for dynamic start-stop behavior with settling times in the milliseconds. An integrated optical linear
Power Meter Bedford, NH — Laser Components is now offering Gentec-EO’s mobile laser power meter, the PRONTO-Si. The device has a robust, easy-to-han- dle housing and intuitive operation, by way of self-explanatory symbols on an illuminated, touch-sensitive color display. When the compact device is folded up, both the sensor and the color touchscreen display are protected. In the area of the silicon sensor, the device is 6 mm (0.24 in.) thick and allows for power measure- ment even in very tight spaces. Due to its highly-sensitive silicon
sensor with an effective aperture of 10 x 10 mm (0.39 x 0.39 in.), it is possible to measure power levels significantly less than 1 nW quickly and precisely. Without the need for extra space, the range of measurement can be expand- ed into the three-digit mW range with

the fields of industry and research, for example, automatic micro-manipulation, positioning of sam- ples or when adjusting optical components, such as objectives and camera lenses. Vacuum-compatible versions (to 10-6 hPa) are also available. In addition, two stages can be combined in an
X/Y setup without needing an adapter plate. The stages are complemented by a number of miniatur- ized closed-loop rotary stages with diameters of 20 to 50 mm (0.79 to 1.97 in.). Finally, a compact piezoceramic plate oscillates at hundreds of kHz, which is inaudible to the human ear. Each cycle transfers a nanometric displacement onto a ceram- ic runner coupled to the moving carriage. No ener- gy is consumed at rest, no heat needs to be dissi-
pated and servo jitter is eliminated. Contact: PI (Physik Instrumente) L.P., 16

the integrated, “upstream” OD1 atten- uator. Low laser power in the wave- length range from 320 nm to 1,100 nm can also be measured. The device is designed to be an
aid for laser safety officers — whether for use in the power measurement of cw laser modules to check the correct laser class designation, or in the test- ing of structural and equipment laser
protective measures. Contact: Laser Components USA, Inc., 116 South River Road,
