Dallas, TX — Texas Instruments has developed a battery management system for wearables and the industrial Internet of Things (IoT) that allows powered devices to stay on without draining the battery. The bq25120 battery management system contains a linear charger, configurable LDO, load switch, buck converter, pushbutton control, and battery voltage monitor. The device supports bat- teries from 3.6 to 4.65V, and fast charge current from 5 to 300mA. Also, it is able to draw a charge from a battery down to 500µA before completing its charging cycle. The device maintains its “on” state at 1.8V


using power path technology and a low Iq buck con- verter. A host microprocessor is able to connect by Bluetooth and continue running during recharging by not extracting “empty energy.” Designers can also achieve long battery shelf life with the system’s


standby mode quiescent current of 50nA. Its configurable LDO and load switch shut off rarely used functions to minimize battery drain. It


also includes an integrated battery voltage moni- tor, enabling a state-of-charge indicator, buck con- verter and pushbutton control features. The device comes in a 2.5 x 2.5 mm (0.01 x


0.01 in.) WCSP package, making it one of the smallest components for wearable and IoT applica- tions. For a more robust product, designers can incorporate the CC2640 wireless MCU, a QFN package solution with integrated Flash for Bluetooth Smart. The bq25120’s I2C programming interface


gives designers the ability to set key parameters including battery charger voltage, current, termi- nation threshold, input current limit, load switch

A version is available that comes with a PFC which has IGBTs with higher current ratings for a wider input voltage range. It is rated for applications with input voltages of 110-220VAC.
