ing the National Consortium for Da- ta Science, a public-private partner- ship to address big data issues launched by RENCI in 2013, as Geor- gia Tech and RENCI develop the Hub’s governance structure and pro- grams. In addition, RENCI will leverage its expertise in technology and software development to manage big data sharing within the South BD Hub and collaboration with other regional hubs, Krishnamurthy said. “The BD Hubs program repre-

sents a unique approach to improv- ing the impact of data science by es- tablishing partnerships among like- minded stakeholders,” said Jim Kurose, NSF’s head of Computer and Information Science and Engineer- ing. “In doing so, it enables teams of data science researchers to come to- gether with domain experts, with cities and municipalities, and with anchor institutions to establish and grow collaborations that will acceler- ate progress in a wide range of sci- ence and education domains with the potential for great societal benefit.” Initial NSF funding for the

South BD Hub will be $1.25 million over three years. In addition to the South BD Hub, the NSF has funded Hubs in the Northeast, Midwest, and Western U.S., which are managed by universities in those regions. Info: www.nsf.gov r

Industry 4.0 in Action: productronica Surpasses Expectations

week progressed. The analogy is simple: if soft-

ware can improve performance imme- diately and further through cyber physical systems that learn, the cus- tomer will be the winner. At productronica the Scoop team

offered an award of the Golden Scoop to the most innovative marketing idea and Mentor’s racetrack was the win- ner, based on votes from the industry’s media. The solution showed creativity and imagination in explaining a rela- tively complex concept. It also had clear curb appeal, bringing visitors to

the booth and engaging them in the debate. Congratulations Mentor. There were many more exam-

ples of good marketing and many got votes from the media, including Hi- tachi’s humanoid robot, which showed off its ability to multitask. In the US the term IoM or In-

ternet of Manufacturing is more widely used and our next chance to discuss this will be at IoM 2016 on February 16th at The Tech Museum in San Jose in the heart of Silicon Valley. Jabil will be keynoting at the event and will also host a cocktail at the company’s Blue Sky facility on the evening of February 15. You can

find more out about IoM 2016 at www.internetofmanufacturing.com or by dropping me an IM on my twit- ter account at @philipstoten. The smart factory debate moved

on last week in Munich and I am sure its progress will accelerate in the com- ing months. Productronica succeeded in delivering some real solutions and moving the discussion forward from philosophical to real implementation. I’m looking forward to seeing much more progress in 2016.
