The company continually launches new products and refines existing ones, supporting the entire process from concept through production, and serving the industrial, commer- cial, telecommunications, medical, and defense markets. The company is headquartered 20 miles North of Charlotte, in Mooresville, NC. VP of Global Operations/CTO
Nick Harris attributes the success of the company’s electronic manufac- turing services to numerous factors including long tenured, committed employees, good equipment, and of course, strategic partnerships. These factors benefit customers by provid- ing dependable, responsive, cus- tomer-focused teams, with the ability to manufacture products at the fore- front of technology. One such strategic partnership
is with Nordson Yestech. GMI has worked with Yestech and its AOI sys- tems since 2010. “I estimate that ap- proximately 98 percent of all the

machines and BX machine. Harris says the company chose to stay with Yestech as its AOI solutions provider due to equipment reliability and ex- cellent support. “The equipment has had little to no service issues. The machines just do not break.” He added that several years ago
GMI hosted a workshop in which OEMs and other EMS providers learned about Yestech. Harris is hop- ing to host another workshop in the near future. The FX AOI systems have 5Mp

color camera imaging technology which offers high-speed PCB in- spection and defect coverage of solder joints and also verifies correct part assembly. With one top-down viewing camera and four side viewing cameras, the FX series is configurable for all line positions. In addition, the systems are equally effective for paste, pre- and post-reflow, as well as final assembly inspec- tion. Off-line programming max- imizes machine utilization and real-time SPC monitoring pro- vides a valuable yield enhance- ment solution. The equipment has provid-
ed a number of benefits for GMI dur- ing its time on the shop floor. Harris says, “A very important key perform- ance indicator for us is plant defects per million opportunities (DPMO).” The company’s target plant DPMO is 232 or 5 sigma. For the past two months, the number has been 112. Harris cites the AOI equipment for the low number. “Our Yestech AOI machines are where a lot of this data is captured and they have to be able to talk with Aegis (manufacturing

software) reliably. The performance of our AOI machines is critical in keeping DPMO levels low. If we have defects that make it past AOI, they would show up at QA verification and test.” GMI uses Aegis software to
track, analyze and improve the man- ufacturing process. Benefits include documentation control, a paperless factory, inventory and WIP tracking, process route control, data collection and mining, TLA serial number to PCB serial number linkage, and traceability. The AOI systems com- municate effortlessly with the soft- ware to keep the process running smoothly. GMI offers extensive printed
circuit board assembly capabilities and expertise, custom box build de- signs from simple to complex, new product introduction services includ- ing hand and machine built proto- types, engineering, and fixture de- sign and development, through its in-house model shop. In addition, the company offers package on package (PoP) configurations for increased component density, lead-free wave solder or selective solder processing on pin-in-hole (PIH) systems and handles both RoHS and non-RoHS projects. Consistent assembly, in- spection, test and packaging combine to ensure quality products and serv- ices for customers. Yestech’s technol- ogy helps GMI deliver these services quickly and reliably because, as Har- ris says, “Customers want it right and they want it quick.” GMI has been providing box

an effective supply chain management and its processes are carefully devel- oped and closely monitored. The result is reliable inventory, overall bill of ma-
