Exar: AC Step Driver for LED Bulbs


Fremont, CA — Exar Corporation, a supplier of high-performance inte- grated circuits and system solutions, has expanded its offering of AC step driver solutions for LED bulbs with the introduction of the XR46073. The new two-step LED current controller for AC step driving has improved line regulation primarily for A19 LED bulb applications. The line regulation is improved by a reported factor of two over the company’s previous generation. The patented AC step driv-


ing ICs provide solutions for bulb, tube and downlight applications that do not require the use of inductors, transformers, elec- trolytic capacitors or metal oxide varistors (MOVs). This allows customers to eliminate the sepa- rate driver circuit board and greatly reduce the total BOM cost of LED bulbs. In addition, the step driver deliv-


ers a high power factor, low THD, high surge immunity, low flicker, and dimming capability with a wide range of industry standard TRIAC dimmers. The company’s prior generation of AC step drivers is comprised of single step controllers, each controlling an individual current level to the LED. The XR46073 integrates two steps of current control to the LED strings, improving the line regulation of the


circuit by monitoring the line voltage and adjusting LED drive current pro- portionally. The step driver is over-voltage


and over-temperature protected. During an over-temperature condi- tion, the step driver smoothly and

continuously reduces current to the LED string, reducing power dissipa- tion in the process, until tempera- tures have stabilized at an accept- able level. The XR46073 is available in a

Surface Mount Screws from PennEngineering


Danboro, PA —PennEngineering has introduced surface mount, spring- loaded captive panel screws designed to provide secure attachment for printed circuit boards. These metal captive screw assem- blies mount in a single piece on a board, using the pick- and-place method, and can be installed at the same time as other surface mount com- ponents. The captive screw technology eliminates the issues and risks associated with the handling and potential loosening of stan- dard screws. They also allow for subsequent access when necessary.
