Discuss the following points in your group of four. 1. Robert asked to speak to Mr Black. He did not once address him as Jack. Employees should rather address their employers as Mr or Ms and not by their first name – even if the employer is young and/or very casual. Do you agree? Give reasons for your answers.
2. Te telephone conversation Mr Black had with Robert was successful. Tat is why he asked to meet Robert the next day. Tere may be many reasons for this. List at least four reasons.

Imagine that you are going for a job interview and the interviewer wants to know your strengths and weaknesses. Each of you has to share with the group one of your strengths and one of your weaknesses. Write down your group’s eight points, but keep the list anonymous. Appoint one of the group to read the list out aloud to the class.

Work in pairs. Prepare a proper telephone conversation of 2-3 minutes on one of the topics below. One of you must ask relevant questions while the other one responds appropriately. It is important to prepare well and speak accurately. Write out the conversation, so that you can practise speaking clearly and with confidence. 1. Phone your favourite CD store or book store and ask to speak to Delia. When you spoke to her last week she gave you a reference number and promised to keep you a copy of the new stock which they expected today. Now Delia can’t find your reference number. Supply her with all the necessary details.
2. You are looking aſter your younger brother while your parents are away for the weekend. Your friend came to visit. She had a headache and took two Panado tablets. Your brother got hold of the tablets and swallowed four. You are worried and phone the local hospital. You speak first to the nurse on duty and then she puts you through to a paediatrician (a doctor who specialises in children’s diseases).
3. Your manager asks you to confirm the booking for the conference room at the Holiday Inn near your work for next Friday. Confirm all the details with the functions manager of the hotel, e.g. how many people, times, refreshments, lunch, parking and equipment requirements like a laptop, screen and microphone.
