She has a special interest in the isiXhosa language. Tessa wrote a letter to the press many years ago (Activity 4). Since then, she has worked extensively to promote promot African languages in South Africa. Activity 5 is an adapted extract from an interview by Shané Kleyn. activity 6 is a short extract from her website, www. afrilang.uct.ac.za. plus two graphs. Comprehension Read the text below and then answer the questions that follow.


Xhosa opens new doors


Last night I visited a local petrol station and decided to use my Xhosa when I asked for petrol. Te reaction was unbelievable! Te attendant danced and clapped and called his friend over and we had a chat about how I had learnt Xhosa, where I came from, etc. I also asked them about themselves and found out that I knew the small village in the Eastern Cape where one of them was born.


Tis often happens to me when I speak Xhosa, pronounce people’s names correctly, help someone who is struggling in the bank, in the chemist or any similar situation. I only started learning Xhosa when I was 24. It is a beautifully structured language. Here are 10 reasons for learning an African language:


1. What is the purpose of this text? 2. Who is the target audience?


3. What is the writer’s point of view about learning an African language?


4. Te title Xhosa opens new doors is used figuratively. 4.1 Identify the figure of speech.
