Module 6 Introduction


Tis course is preparing you for the workplace and although you may fear having to speak in public, you have to practise addressing a large group of people as you will have to make speeches or announcements at work one day. It may be to introduce a new staff member, to explain certain procedures at work, to make a thank-you speech or to act as programme coordinator. In this module we will look at how to make different speeches and presentations as well as using non- verbal communication and visual aids correctly.


1. Non-verbal communication (body language)


We are not always aware that our body language sends accurate messages. Tink of how you sat at the desk of the interviewer’s office when you enrolled for this course. How do you sit when you watch soccer with your friends? When you deliver a speech, you will make a good impression if you look tidy, are neatly dressed, stand up straight and appear relaxed. You must learn how to use non- verbal communication to support and convey meaning to your words and not to be in conflict with them.


Facial expressions Adapt your expression to suit the contents of your speech. Use the following facial expressions in a natural way:  Smile when you greet the audience and when you say something funny.  Raise your eyebrows when you ask a question.  Frown when you highlight a problem.


Gestures and signs Gestures and signs are normally indicated by moving the head, arms and hands. If you use gestures correctly they emphasise what you are saying. Show which possible gestures/signs a speaker can use when saying the following:        


Tone Tis is feeling or emotion reflected in the voice. Sometimes we hear the  the complaint is about how something was said and not what was said. Te tone usually reveals if the speaker is sincere, sympathetic, irritated, sad, etc. Say the following sentences by acting out the different emotions in brackets:      
