Word order (revision) What is a full sentence? A full sentence has a SUBJECT and a VERB. A noun or pronoun (naming word) is in the subject. Te subject is the doer of the action. Te verb (doing word) shows the action. Aſter the verb you may find an OBJECT. Te object is also a noun or pronoun. A full sentence should therefore have a Subject, a Verb and, perhaps, an Object.

English is an SV(O) language: subject, verb, object S V

O Te secretary wrote the minutes. S V She wrote accurately.

Voice is the form of the verb which shows whether the subject does something, or has something done to it.

A verb is in the active voice when the subject of the sentence does something, e.g. Te manager conducted the interview. Te manager is the subject, conducted is the verb and the interview is the object.

A verb is in the passive voice when the subject of the sentence has something done to it by another person, place or thing, e.g. Te interview was conducted by the manager.

What was the object in the active voice sentence becomes the subject in the passive voice sentence, e.g. Te interview was conducted by the manager.

Active voice: Te dog bit the boy.

Passive voice: Te boy was bitten by the dog. How to form the passive voice

Use a form of the verb to be: is/am; was/were; will be depends on the tense in the sentence, e.g. was

+ past participle + verb + -ed/irregular list, e.g. bitten

+ by and person/thing who did the action by the dog
