“It is music that brings us together, and the musical passion that we pass on.”
when the music was so powerful that it touched the soul. I have experienced it many times since with my own elementary music students as they performed, and I talk about it with my university students now as I prepare the next generation of music teachers.
Those of us that teach send our students forth into the world sometimes without knowing what impact we have had, or where they will land. Cal Brockman knew the legacy that he had passed on to me. A few years ago, one of my former students landed a teaching job in Shawano. Sometimes the world is very small. The baton that was passed to me has now been returned to my hometown in the legacy of another generation and will hopefully spread further as I continue to prepare more music teachers for the future.
My guess is that there are many more stories like this one around our wonder- fully musical state. It is music that brings us together, and the musical passion that we pass on.
From Cal Brockman’s Obituary: Brockman was active in the Wisconsin Music Educators Conference, serving several years as a program planner for the state convention and selecting music for the state contest list for both bands and woodwinds. As adjudicator, clinician and guest conductor, he was invited to work in area schools in Wisconsin, Michigan and Illinois. He was also a teacher of clarinet, theory and conducting at the summer music camp at UW-Madison, and guest

conductor of bands for summer camp programs at UW-Stevens Point. Brockman was past president and member emeritus of the Wisconsin Bandmasters Associa- tion, life member of the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, and the Wisconsin Education Association. In recognition of his contribution and growth to music education in his chosen commu-
nity, Brockman received the Hugo Anhalt Award from the UW-Milwaukee Music Alumni Association and the A.H. McAl- lister Award for leadership and growth in Music Education in America.
