WMEA News Jim Scheuer, WMEA President-Elect NAfME National Assembly

WMEA President Leyla Sanyer, President- Elect Jim Scheuer and Executive Director Tim Schaid represented WMEA members at the NAfME National Assembly in the Washington, D.C. area from June 27 to July 1. Also attending from Wisconsin was Christine Hayes, who serves as chair of the NAfME Council for General Music Education. In addition to several days of meetings and discussions, all four spent a day on Capitol Hill participating in the NAfME Advocacy Day. While there they were able to visit the offices of Senator Tammy Baldwin and Congressmen Mark Pocan, Tom Petri, Paul Ryan and Sean Duffy to emphasize their concerns about keeping music education at the core of every American child’s education and as a core subject in the ESEA reauthorization bills in Congress at that time. Discussions were all very positive, and WMEA leaders were pleased to find that every aid they spoke to on Capitol Hill had been involved in music when they were in school and some were still making music as adults!

The college representatives joined the rest of the council for an afternoon of discus- sions about the future of music education in Wisconsin and a review of the WMEA strategic plan. In both cases, breakout groups explored various topics, then re- ported back to the entire council, which engaged in further discussion.

WMEA Emerging Leaders Workshop After several years’ hiatus, WMEA once again held an emerging leaders workshop on July 29. Teachers with three to five

years of experience were identified by WMEA board members and invited to at- tend a day of information, discussions and networking opportunities. Approximately 25 young music educators attended the workshop. Topics included overviews of the state music associations, advocacy, music education issues and initiatives and leadership opportunities. Former WMEA Executive Director Mike George and Past-President John Gilliland joined current leadership and staff in presenting the workshop.
