Welcome to the new school year and this issue of Wisconsin School Musician.
The WSMA Pub- lications Commit- tee, comprised of a diverse group of Wisconsin music
educators, met in January to determine WSM themes that would be relevant and timely this school year. It is clear to me that educating the whole child is a topic music educators strongly believe in be- cause “Music for Body, Mind & Soul” was unanimously embraced for the theme of this issue.
More than ever, music educators are rec- ognizing the value of planned instruction with attention to the kinesthetic, cognitive and affective domains of learning. This is proudly exemplified in the Wisconsin Comprehensive Musicianship Through Performance (CMP) Project, with teaching practices focusing on the whole child ex- tending throughout our state and beyond.
Speaking of our great state… While in production of this issue, I managed to break away for an annual trout fishing trip with my good friend to the tributar- ies of Lake Superior, which offered the ultimate ambience and tranquility of the Northwoods. In addition to how pleasant it was just being “out there,” I felt full use of body, mind and soul, all at once, while wading the streams, strategizing my next cast and experiencing that amazing feeling of serenity surrounded by nature. It was a great reminder of how this theme can ex- tend to a balance in all walks of life, just as it does in music education, when all parts are working together in harmony.
I invite you to turn the pages and consider the balance you bring to the lives of your students through teaching music for body, mind and soul. In this issue, also dedicated to the Wisconsin State Music Conference, we bring this theme to life through articles that accentuate its importance in today’s music classroom.
