Autumn Underground Wins Launchpad Competition

The Launchpad state finals competition ended on a high note for Middleton High School’s Autumn Underground with the group taking home the coveted Les Paul Award for 2013. With three bands advancing from each of the four statewide regionals and the addition of the wild card online voting procedure through Broadjam, 13 bands qualified to perform at the state finals competition held June 8, 2013 in the SETT at Union South on the UW-Madison campus. The 13 final- ists all received the opportunity to perform at Summerfest in addition to receiving a digital recorder from Yamaha and a Shure microphone.

Through a partnership with WSMA, Yamaha will be provid- ing an equipment package to the school music program of the winning Launchpad group. Brad Schneider, Tom Mielke and Steve Kurr, Middleton High School music teachers, will be

able to choose from one of four packages that include a silent string quartet, Clavinova, drum set or a live sound system. A presentation at the school will be made this fall.

Launchpad has become one of the fastest growing and exciting new WSMA programs offered to high school students. It encour- ages students to creatively put into practice lessons learned in their school music program. Thank you to music teachers from around Wisconsin for preparing bands for this event as well as to the spon- sors. Through these important connections Launchpad will continue as a viable and successful student opportunity.
