Information About the Breakfast and Ideas for Contacting Your Legislators Julie Brown, WMEA State Chair, Government Relations

On Thursday, Octo- ber 24, Wisconsin Music Educators As- sociation (WMEA), in conjunction with Wisconsin Advo- cates for Music Ed- ucation (WAME), will be sponsoring a legislative breakfast

as a part of the Wisconsin State Music Conference. The breakfast will be held in the Grand Terrace of the Monona Terrace from 8:30-10 a.m. In addition to featuring performances by Wisconsin music students and a keynote address by Susan Lipp, chairman of the board for Full

Compass Systems, Ltd., this breakfast will allow you to sit down with your state legislators and talk about the importance of music in our schools, as well as what is happening in music education in your part of the state. As the WMEA government relations chair, I cannot stress enough the importance of you not only attending this breakfast, but also inviting your legisla- tors to attend as well. If you have never contacted your representative in Madison, here are some ideas to get you going:

• If you do not know who your state legislators are, you can find out via this web site: http://legis.wisconsin.gov/ Pages/waml.aspx.

• Contact your legislators and personally invite them to this important breakfast. Each senator and representative will be getting an invitation to the legislative breakfast by me, but hearing from their own constituents goes a lot further. An email, phone call or written letter are all acceptable ways to contact legislators.

• If you would like an idea of what to write in an email or letter, you can find a template created for your use at www. wmeamusic.org/breakfast.

• Do not get discouraged if you hear back from a member of your legislator’s staff rather than from your legislator directly.
