reminded numerous times to not take any of the driving examples home with them! To accommodate the number of vehicles on the road, each day those with a certain ending on a license plate are not allowed to drive. We figured out why the glow sticks were such a hit in our show – the Chinese people love neon colored lights! In Shang- hai especially, they have an area along the river that has every building lit up at night with unending colors. The people of China have many excellent policies in place, but following them is the challenge. When they decide to fix something, however, they fix it immediately. We were told that drinking and driving was an issue. To fix it, those who were caught drinking and driving were put in a hotel for two months – unable to contact their families or places of employment. To top it off, their names were published in the paper. A blemished family name is one of the greatest disappointments a Chinese family can have. There is no longer a problem with drinking and driving.


Concert Halls


The performance halls that LAS per- formed in were billion dollar concert halls – most of which could hold 2,000 or more people. The government owns all of the halls. Many of the stages were so big that a curtain in the middle of the stage gave us ample space for our performance. Under the lights we felt like rock stars as most of the auditoriums had state-of-the-art light- ing. Two of the halls had unique designs. Xuzhou was glass and shaped like a lotus flower, and the Shanghai Oriental Arts Center was also glass and was created to look like a butterfly from above.


While the two-week performance tour in China was an incredible experience, it makes a person’s mind, body and soul thankful for clean air, blue sky and orga- nized horn-free driving! “This was a life changing trip for these talented young musicians as well as the adult chaperones. Our students shared their unique expres- sion of music with people across the globe and also experienced a world far from their own with open eyes and open
