Grant Opportunity for Wisconsin School Jazz Programs

Madison Jazz Society will award grants on a competi- tive basis to school jazz centered programs in Wiscon- sin this October. Grant proposals may include, but are not limited to, purchasing instruments and equipment, sheet music, play-along CDs, books or videos and, to a lesser extent, clinics and hiring of guest artists. Final selection will be based partly on which proposal(s) provides the greatest opportunity for the greatest number of students to learn about and/or participate in jazz related activities. Music programs that have received grants in past years are eligible to apply, as well as any other interested school. The application deadline is October 9. MPS Schools Add Certified Music Teacher Positions

According to Douglass Kuepper, music teacher and former music educa- tion curriculum specialist for Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS), another 23 MPS schools that previously did not have music instruction by a certified music teacher, will have students receiving music education by certified music teachers this school year. “With more schools adding music education by certified music teachers, it’s essential to continue to build on the number of music educators needed. Thus, for this fall we have 16 new music teachers in the district providing music instruction for our students. Of the 16 music teachers, 7.2 positions are filling vacancies from retirements/resignations,” noted Kuepper. According to Kuepper, the school board has approved in fall of 2014 to provide district funds so that every student in all elementary/K-8 schools will receive weekly music instruction by a quality, licensed music educator. Kuepper also notes that he is returning to the classroom this year.
