Adult All State Border-to-Border Performance Groups Has the Time Come?

Thomas Heninger, WMEA State Chair, Adult Education

Have you ever been to a musical event or recital and wit- nessed a stunning performance by an extremely young musician? Invari- ably the compli- ments, praise and support follows the

performance in massive volumes. It is almost a sure thing that if opportunities present themselves the young student will be motivated towards another such performance.

Here’s another scenario that I’ve witnessed.

An elderly mother with two adult mentally challenged children living at home, who never sang in a choir and has no clue how to read music, responds to the call to learn trombone as her church forms a trombone choir. With over a year of diligent practice she is able to struggle through five hymns for a worship service. Though no one praises her for a spectacular performance she has gained an enormous amount of self worth and found a source of joy that we all know has the ability to raise the human spirit to new heights.

Opportunities to perform as adults abound in our state. Aside from the myriad of church music opportunities we have

identified hundreds of adult community musical performance groups in our state. These adult ensembles rehearse and perform concerts and enrich the lives of thousands of adults.

At the Wisconsin State Music Conference this fall, we will have the opportunity to hear our marvelous State Honors groups perform. The opportunity to perform in this venue is truly a “mountain top” expe- rience for these students and the memory will last a lifetime.

Is it time to provide such an opportunity for our adult musicians? If so, what format will best accommodate the needs of the busy adult life? How will we select these individuals and how will we fund these opportunities.

These and other questions will be ex- plored in a session at the conference in October.
