Concert Festivals and Concert Rubrics Revisions

In the past, directors were required to have a minimum number of performers to register a concert ensemble. Permission was required to register ensembles with fewer than the requisite number of participants or a written waiver of the requirement could be requested if the requisite number of performers was not satisfied. Beginning with the 2013-14 festival season, concert festival requirements have been clarified and simplified to assist directors and recognize concert membership.

WSMA Festival Rule VI.C.2: All concert ensembles are eligible and encouraged to participate in a WSMA Concert Festival offering as outlined in Rule V.A.2. Concert Ensembles with less than 16 performers in vocal groups or less than 20 performers in instrumental groups may submit a written request to WSMA to waive the concert require- ment.

WSMA Festival Adjudicators Committee has developed a new concert festival rubric specific to full orchestra, chamber orchestra and string orchestra, which will now be used at all WSMA Concert Festivals. In the process, concert band rubrics have also been updated deleting string references and expanding wind/ percussion specific criteria.

All comment only forms for concert festivals (band, orchestra, choir) have been aligned with those used in solo and ensemble festivals. A single target goal and an expanded area for written comments have been incorporated into the revised comment only forms.

The new and revised rubrics are available for pre-festival review via the “Concert Festivals” quick-link of your MyCenter account. Addi- tionally, the updated evaluation forms are each included in the current version of the WSMA Concert Manager computer program.

Deadlines Change for All WSMA District Festivals

Festival subsidy distribution is dependent on participating teachers and school business managers completing registrations in a timely manner. In an effort to better meet the necessary timelines of school business offices, host schools and WSMA, deadlines for district festival permissions and registrations have been revised.

Beginning with the current festival season, permission request deadlines have been increased to six weeks.

WSMA Festival Rule IX.A.1: WSMA must receive permission requests no later than six weeks prior to the District Festival. An email confirmation will be sent upon receipt.

Both Concert and Solo & Ensemble Festival registrations have been increased from the previous three-week deadline to a four-week deadline.

WSMA Festival Rule IV.A.6.a: Concert Festival Registrations must be sent to WSMA with payment and a copy to the Concert Festival Manager at least four weeks prior to the Concert Festival.

WSMA Festival Rule IV.E.10.a: District Festival Registration Forms with payment from all participating schools must be sent to WSMA and a copy to the District Festival Manager at least four weeks prior to the District Festival.
