Thermacore: Breakthrough Thermal Technology Designs


Lancaster, PA — Thermacore, Inc. is offering a new generation of compact, custom-built, high-performance air- cooled heat sinks, the result of a mul- timillion-dollar development contract from the DARPA, which ended on September 30, 2012. The new heat sink products re-


flect advances in the development and commercialization of active heat sink technologies, achieved as part of the DARPA Micro-technologies for Air-Cooled Exchangers (MACE) pro- gram. After the results of the compa- ny’s initial MACE demonstration step exceeded DARPA expectations in early 2011, the company proceeded to develop four varieties of passive heat sink products, all representing

improved airside heat transfer per- formance over existing state-of-the- art heat sinks. The design integrates Therma-Base Vapor Chamber tech- nology within a 3-dimensional ther- mal solution, with vapor flow spread- ing heat both laterally in the base and into planar appendage heat pipe blades. High-density fins are at- tached to the planar blades for en- hanced thermal performance. The MACE-developed heat sinks will be available for insertion


into four chassis cooling formats, 3U through 6U, and will reportedly pro- vide excellent thermal uniformity and low thermal resistance. These compact, high-perform-


ance air-cooled heat sink products will handle heat loads from 250 Watts to 2,000 Watts, depending on model. Although the design and lay- out of the heat sinks is novel, their construction involves standard mate- rials such as copper (wall and wick) and aluminum (fins); the working
