These membranes are either used in the automotive indus- try as pressure-compensating ele- ments which protect against conden- sate and compensate for changes in pressure, or they are used as filter media in technical medical compo- nents and consumer items. Milwaukie, OR — In its search to uncover one of the oldest working mod- els of its signature M.O.L.E.® thermal profiling technology, ECD launched a two-month contest among its cus- tomers. After numerous entries from around the globe, the winner of the old- est M.O.L.E. challenge was announced early this year. The owner of the M.O.L.E., built in 1987, is Murata Power Solutions, a Massa chusetts- based power systems manufacturer.
TAKAYA Think Quality - Think Takaya
Takaya pioneered Flying Probe Test and became the worldwide standard by providing the performance, reliability, and local support to meet the demanding and varying requirements of electronics manufacturers, especially in a quick-turn environment.

ed to process the membranes. First the previously assembled mem- branes had to be removed from a car- rier belt by means of vacuum han- dling and supplied to the ultrasonic welding tool (sonotrode) to then be welded onto the plastic component by the pneumatic sealing stroke. The new HiQ MPW (Modular
Punch Weld) machine can punch and weld at the same time. A cheaper membrane material belt of 5 to 22mm can therefore be used as the membrane does not have to be tai- lored in advance. In one single step, the unit
transports the membrane belt by conveyor; punches the membrane contour; welds the membrane onto the part. This saves material and reduces the cycle time to less than 2 seconds per weld cycle which trans- lates into a major improvement in OEE (Overall Equipment Efficiency). The standard optical quality
control previously undertaken down- stream is not needed because the MPW system has a vacuum monitor

to reliably check whether the mem- brane is correctly punched and posi- tioned. The machine control also pro- vides gentle conveyor transport with a splice check which reduces other sources of error and therefore poten- tial production downtime. A special position measuring
system for high cycle rates is wear- free. The MPW unit can be flexibly integrated into automation lines or

And the winner is. . .Murata engineering manager Ron Suosa holding the old and new profilers.
The entry was submitted by Ron
Souza, Manufacturing Engineering Manager at Murata, who was certain the 25-year-old M.O.L.E. stood a good chance of winning. “I was pretty confi- dent we’d be in the running,” says Souza. “And, I was thrilled when we won. This M.O.L.E. has been an absolute powerhouse — working con- sistently well for over 25 years. But, I am really looking forward to using the latest ECD profiling technology, the SuperM.O.L.E. Gold 2, which was our prize for winning the contest.” ECD’s SuperM.O.L.E. Gold 2 is
the industry standard for exceptional profiling performance. A yield-en han - cing, time-saving and cost-reducing system, the SuperM.O.L.E. Gold 2 offers expanded features that make thermal process measurement and analysis immensely simple and effec- tive. Data storage of up to 96 profiles, instant profile validation and “waste no runs” technology, are but a few fea- tures of the SuperM.O.L.E. Gold 2’s capability.
