micropigmentation

“TheUKare seen as the global leaders in semi-permanentmake-up”

- Andrew Stassi, Smudge-free

Micropigmentation, or semi- permanentmake-up as it is otherwise known, is establishing itself globally as at the forefront of aesthetic procedures available in salons and Spas, and it is the UK that is leading the way.

“Micropigmentation has evolved dramatically in the last decade or so and especially in the UK,” explainsAndrew Stassi,Managing Director of Smudge- free. “The standards involved in carrying out these procedures are extremely high. With the Occupational Standards and guidelines set by HABIA and increasing pressure fromHealth and Safety, the UK are seen as the global leaders in semi-permanentmake- up.This applies to both the level of skill by some of the leading practitioners and froma clinical aspect as to how the treatments are conducted.”

“The career opportunities for permanent cosmetic specialists are vast and turn upon the individual’s lifestyle choices and ambition,” addsTracey Simpson, director at Natural Enhancement. “There are very few professions that can generate such a feeling of job satisfaction or allow the practitioner so much flexibility regarding the hours or location in which they work.”

She continues: “Micropigmentation is becoming one of themost sought-after procedures in the beauty arena for both its aesthetic andmedical benefits.”

“Semi-permanent make-up is still one of the few cosmetic procedures that requires a specially skilled person who has a passion for beauty creativity and

who would go to great lengths to create facial features that may have been lost through ageing, over- plucking (eyebrows), chemotherapy, or other ailments,” saysMichael Pegg of Hibiscus Beauty Clinic. “Once you have mastered the technique and understand the procedures, you can turn your skills into a profitable business, which is not only financially but also morally rewarding.”

what is micropigmentation?

“Semi-permanentmake-up (SPMU) or Micropigmentation, is the art and science of applyingmicro-insertions of hypo- allergenic colour pigments into the dermal layer of the skin for the purpose of cosmetic and/or corrective enhancement. It is putting the right colour into the right place so you can look better naturally,” explainsMichael.

He continues: “While the concept has only recently been introduced to the West, it has been in use for centuries in other parts of the world and can be traced right back to the ancient beauty arts of Egypt and the Orient.”

“There is some controversy as to whether these procedures should be called permanent or semi-permanent due to the fact that some particles will remain in the dermis indefinitely, but in the UK it is known as semi- permanent cosmetic make-up due to the visual effects,” explainsAndrew. “The procedures today are designed to last from one to three years and this allows for subsequent treatments in the future to be augmented as the morphology changes with age.

“The depth of implantation is not as deep as conventional tattoos and sits in the layers of skin, which exfoliate. [At Smudge-free] we use Iron Oxide-based colour pigments as opposed to carbon- based, which are used in conventional body art. This is why semi-permanent make-up fades over time. The duration of the procedure’s life varies fromperson to person and is dependant onmany factors such as after-care, biological and atmospheric conditions, hence the visible effects cannot be given a definitive life expectancy.”

Due to the nature of the pigment and its placement below the epidermis, subsequent treatments are required to maintain the depth of colour – thus repeat business for skilful technicians is virtually guaranteed.

“With increased demand in the permanent cosmetics industry, there are a whole host of benefits to both individuals and salons who wish to offer Micropigmentation,” says Karen Betts, director of the Nouveau Beauty Group.

Michael Pegg adds: “Semi-permanent make-up’s benefit tomost clients is that it gives back the precious time they normally spend ‘putting on their face’, not tomention themoney saved buying new and expensive products.”

In particular, there are certain features whichMicropigmentation is synonymous for improving. “The superficial cosmetic procedures such as eyebrow recreation, eye enhancements and lip enhancements have been given a massive popularity boost thanks to realityTV programmes and favourable write-ups in the glossymagazines,” says Andrew.
