Formany of your clients, a nail treatment is a regular essential to keep their nails looking their best; however a little pampering can often feel like a far off luxury. By offering luxury natural nail manicures your client can experience the best of both worlds.


I have a nail treatment every three weeks, which has becomemore of an essential ritual rather than a pampering treat. I like my nails to look their best and I’matmy happiest when I have a faultless French with perfect smile lines. But that’s all I have, I never choose to have the luxury of a pampering treatment alongside this and I betmany of your clients are exactly the same.


The thing is, ifmy nail technician offered to add a luxurymanicure treatment ontomy regular nail treatment for a few extra pounds, I’mpretty sure I would jump at the chance; let’s face it, we all love a little extra pampering and treating ourselves!


With this inmind, every salon should have a luxury natural nailmanicure on their treatmentmenu and everymember of staff should be up-selling when a client books their nail treatment, whether it be a polish or a standardmanicure.


“Manicures in Spas (and salons) are big business, and with a low treatment cost and a good retailing opportunity they are a very effective way of increasing your business and turnover,” saysTara Oldham, Head of Education at LenaWhite / OPI. “Some of the UK’s top Spas are carrying out in excess of £100,000 worth of hand and foot treatments a year with only aminimal number of workstations.”


Don’t be frightened to try and encourage clients to upgrade their treatments; people might have tightened their purse strings, but the beauty industry is still one that’s going strong, with clients looking to treat themselves to a little extravagance tomake up for the cutting back they’re doing elsewhere.


According to research byMintel, consumers are still prepared to pay extra for small luxuries. “The recession has encouraged a cost conscious attitude to


everyday beauty lines in Britain, with consumers looking for value and offers where they can,” says HilaryMonk, Senior RetailAnalyst atMintel. “However, at the same time, as consumers activelymanage their budgets they have developed a ‘skimp and splash’ pattern of shopping behaviours whereby they look for affordable treats to supplement their economising attitudes.” Price your luxurymanicure treatments just right and they could be the affordable treat that clients are splashing out on.


Clients often turn their attention to the parts of the body that can be seen and amanicure offers instant gratification for the client. But if they could see instant results and feel pampered too, it’s likely to be an appealing treatment for them.


“A hand treatment appeals to everyone,” saysTara. “Whereas peoplemay be too body conscious to indulge in other Spa treatments, amanicure is an instantly gratifying treatment that would appeal to everyone, whatever their hang-ups.


“An important part ofmanicure and pedicure services is thinking about what you are offering. Steer clear of the words manicure and choose the word treatment.A Spa service should be about treating the skin, the cuticle and the nails.Amanicure suggests nail painting; a hand treatment suggests skin care. It instantly upscales the treatment and creates a feeling of client exclusivity.”


ParaffinWax treatments can also add a little extra luxury to anymanicure service. “Heated ParaffinWax evokes a feeling of comfort as it surrounds the skin and penetrates warmth through the feet and hands.Why not add this extra service to a (manicure) for those looking for a little extra luxury and pampering?” says Laura Hughes, EducationManager at Grafton International.

A lot of therapists will say that add-on sales is a part of their job that they don’t particularly enjoy, but when it comes to hand care, it’s one of the easiest areas to sell in, especially after the client has just had a luxury hand treatment, they should want to keep up the results between appointments.


“Retail is easy,” says Lisa Dunlop, National TrainingManager for Cuccio Europe. “Do not believe you can’t do it, or that you’re no good at sales, etc.We, as nail techs, are generally extremely passionate about what we do, that’s whatmakes us good and successful and so this is your greatest tool.”


Offer hand creams, nail files, buffers, cuticle oils, nail polishes, topcoats and basecoats in your retail area, especially on the reception desk, where an impulse purchase is likely to bemade during payment for treatment.


Don’t fall into the trap of leaving sales until the lastminute either, during the treatment talk to your client about their hands and nails, offer themadvice and recommend products that could work at home for them.
