skin smart
technology and your business
David Suzuki explains why you shouldn’t dismiss smaller hand held systems
Modern technology has enhanced every aspect of our culture, including the world of aesthetics. Historically, a business ownermay have been vacillating on whether or not to introduce skin care technology into their business. Today’s question revolves around the type, size, and cost of the technology that best suits the needs of their business.
Although there seems to be an endless array of technology to choose from, generallywe can consider themin three different categories; hand held – often referred to as “gear”,mid size – often referred to as “accent” and large technology – often referred to as “pro”.The cost of each technology usually parallels the size and category. For example hand held gear is generally the lowest cost technology, and pro typically carries the highest cost.
Many assume that hand held gear and accent technology are reserved for those businesses who cannot afford large pro
devices.This assumption is
completelymisguided.Agood analogy andmodel to consider isApple. It is common for one person to own an iPhone, iPad,MacBookAir, and iMacDesktop Pro; I do.Whilemy iPhone is handy for a variety of tasks, surfing theweb ismuchmore interesting onmy iPad. I travelwithmy MacBookAir,while inmy office I prefermy iMacDesktop Pro because of the faster speed and large display. Each one of theApple products plays a role inmy daily life and in my pursuit to building a successful business.
defining technology
Hand held gear is just that, hand held. It is small, light, compact and battery operated. It ismade and designed for quick and convenient use. Since it does not need to be
plugged in, this type of technology can be used in any
environment.Because of its lightweight and petite designs they can usually beworn or kept on the skin therapistwith lanyards or handy gear tool belts that forward thinkingmanufactures have designed.
The quality ofmost hand held technology is made to a professional grade, and designed to be used day in and day out in a professional environment, with costs ranging from£25 to £450. Professional hand held technologymay include skinmagnification deviceswithwhite light LEDandUVlights to expose sun damage and congestion, self lit vision visors withmultiplemagnification intensities that can beworn by the skin therapist at all times, quickmoisture analysis devices thatwork on the basis of bio-impedance technology, ultrasonic/microcurrent skin scrubbers that helpwith the exfoliation process and greatly encourage product penetration, andmini microcurrent devices designed formini lifting services.
Although there are a handful of verywell designed, large, complete skin analysis systems, they are very expensive ranging from £10,000 to £20,000, take up the better part of a treatment room, and require at least 30 minutes to go through the complete analysis. None of these attributes are conducive to today’s skin therapistwho are predominantly
the only person in their business and generally work out of one room.Having a good hand heldwhite light LED/UVmagnification tool, a self litwhite light LEDvision visor, and a compactmoisture analysis toolwill cost you less than £
100.These three tools eliminate the need for the uber expensive systems and a rickety, space consumingmag
lamp. These types of tools are agile andwell designed, and can be used very rapidly during your
consultation. As importantly, they can be used during the service as the skin is changing and reacting to different products and technology. Because they are on your person at all times, they can also be used in any environment – in the roomor out, including the retail area!
what’s your accent?
Accent technology is generallymid sized and mid priced.Unlike battery operated hand held technology, they are powered by awall receptacle; plugging themin is required. Comparatively to that of large pro technology, accent technology is very compact and takes up less space in the treatment
room.Although they are not asmobile as hand held technology, they can easily bemoved from roomto room, and light enough to realistically bemoved to different locations. This is an important feature, asmany skin therapistswork atmore than one location during theirworkingweek.
