After a Summer of over- indulgence, it’s natural that a number of your clients will want to rid their bodies of the excesses that could be causing themweight gain, poor skin condition, cellulite and even increased cholesterol levels.

Although ‘Detox’may just seemlike an on- trend fad, ridding the systemof toxins does produce results, but what do wemean by this?According to Susan Cressy, author of the Illustrated BeautyTherapy Dictionary, Detoxification is: “The use of specific treatments to cleanse the body of impurities and toxins that have accumulated.”The book goes on to describe a ‘toxin’ as “any poison, any substance that has a toxic effect on the body.”

“Youmay be interested to know that the chemical analysis of sweat reveals it to have almost the same constituents as urine, and thatmore than one pound of waste products are discarded through your skin every day. It is easy to forget that the skin is actually a major organ of elimination just like our kidneys and colon,” explain Elemis.

“If the skin becomes inactive with its pores choked bymillions of dead skin cells, uric acid and other impurities build up in the body. Other eliminative organs such as the kidneys and the liver will have to increase their labour and will eventually become overworked. If toxins and wastes build up in the tissue, sooner or later disharmony will follow.”

TheArt and Science of BeautyTherapy, edited by Jane Foulston, Elaine Hall, Fae Major andMargueriteWynne, also explains that it is a build up of toxins that causes problems. “Stimulating the body’s natural Detoxification pathway should substantially improve the elimination process thereby improving the appearance and tone of skin.”

Lorraine Perretta,Advanced Nutrition Programme’s nutritional consultant says: “If your skin looks dull, you’re feeling tired and ‘toxic’ fromover-indulgence, it could be time to embark on a top-to-toe Detox programme.

“Reduce the toxins you’ve already been exposed to and improve your body’s own ability to eliminate them, and you’ll be well on your way to glowing skin and improved energy levels. We experience an improvement in the appearance of cellulite, our hormone balance is better, skin becomes less dry or less oily accordingly, and cholesterol levels reduce.”

A number of professional treatments can be offered by salons and Spas, to help you tomaximise on what can be a lucrative formof therapy.

it’s a wrap

“Detox bodymasks can sometimes fall under the category of seaweed or herbal wraps, but theymay also use their own specific Detoxifying ingredients. Similarly, theymay ormay not be designed to induce inch loss,” explain the writers of TheArt and Science of Beauty Therapy.

They continue: “Because Detoxmasks are designed to induce perspiration they are always used in conjunction with a wrap.

“Ingredients used in Detoxmasks are those associated with stimulation and are circulation boosting, Popular oils and botanicals include: Citrus (gels or oils) – Lemon, Orange, Grapefruit; Rosemary; Juniper Berry; and Cypress.”

BodyWrapping has a history of offering Detoxification properties. “Wrapping the body tightly in saturated bandages originates fromAmerica, this serves to remove wastes and toxins fromthe body, while additionally achieving an instant reduction in girth,” explains Nic Coomber,Managing Director of Beauty Concepts International, distributors of the Biodroga Institut range.

In the Biodroga FitnessWrap, the principle of osmosis is employed: the highly concentrated salt content of the DetoxifyingMud Pack is able to remove waste products fromthe body.

The metabolism-stimulatingAlgae Gel, in combination with the saturated bandages, draws off waste produced in the body, simultaneously supplying the skin with valuable minerals and trace elements.

This 50-minute treatment purifies and detoxifies the tissue, smoothing the skin at problem zones and preventing cellulite. Fluid accumulation is reduced and metabolic activity is increased, plus microcirculation and lymph flow are stimulated.

Another option is SpaRitual’s Center Yourself Organic Balancing BodyWrap, made with 70%certified organic ingredients that protect, repair and purify all skin types. This customisable wrap works as a two-part system to maximise skin and chakra balancing benefits.
