As a result, a total of thirteen 800mm square Monodraught Windcatcher natural ventilation systems were fitted, one in each of the eight first floor classrooms; together with Windcatcher systems to the training area, teaching area, a meeting and community area, and two reception classrooms on the second floor.
In addition, 450mm diameter Monodraught Sunpipes were installed in the Surestart Centre to provide a flood of natural daylight into darker areas of the large nursery room, which are away from the windows.
A single 300mm diameter Sunpipe was also fitted in a designated Quiet Area since Sunpipes provide a soothing, calming effect on children.
Commenting on the effectiveness of the installation, Terry Blackburn says: “As schools tend to have classrooms with single sided ventilation, Monodraught Windcatchers are a very effective means of bringing ventilation into interior spaces. Windcatcher natural ventilation systems provide an easily achievable solution that is both variable and controllable.”
The two-storey building housing eight classrooms has a single membrane pitched roof. To enhance the visual aspect of the building and add interest to an otherwise plain roof, the Windcatcher systems were produced in two different tones of grey, one to match and one to contrast with the roof colour.
Commenting for Monodraught, Professor Terry Payne says he is delighted that children are experiencing the benefits of natural ventilation and daylight from such an early age. Highlighting the benefits of natural lighting as an example, he says: “Numerous studies have proved the positive influence of maximising daylight on students and teachers and the 1999 findings of the Heschong Mahone group clearly
show the positive impact of daylight on school children. In addition, a 1998 article ‘Benefits of Natural Daylighting’ highlights increased achievement rates, reduced fatigue factors, improved pupil health, improved attendance and enhancement of general development.”
