38 STRUCTURES Metsec in the frame for urban school


A COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL IN STREATHAM, SOUTH EAST LONDON, HAS GAINED A UNIQUE NEW SPORTS HALL THANKS TO A COMBINATION OF METSEC’S LIGHTWEIGHT STEEL FRAMES AND BEAMS AND AN INNOVATIVE BUILDING DESIGN FROM URBAN SPACE MANAGEMENT (USM).

SM, the main contractor on the project, also provided the design for Dunraven School, which uses modified shipping containers as mega- building blocks linked by Metsec’s steel framing to create an innovative wall structure. Metsec lattice trusses have been used to support the roof on Metsec Z purlins.


Specialist contractor Chartway Ltd, ordered three 18 metre mono pitch lattice trusses from Metsec to span the space between the stacked shipping containers, which form three sides of the building’s structure; and a pre- engineered Metsec frame, to create the sports hall’s glazed end wall, which was constructed on site. The glazed wall comprises 342mm deep rails sections, used as vertical mullions, and 142mm deep rails used as crosspieces. Constructing the building in this way allowed Chartway to complete the frame in just three weeks. Chartway’s David Brough comments, “Metsec was already specified for the project, but we would have chosen them anyway because of our trust in them to deliver products and support exactly when we need it.”

Metsec’s lattice beams and trusses are ideal for structures such as sports halls, which need a large area without support pillars, as they can span up to 40m. Lightweight and easy to handle on site, the open lattice allows for easy, flexible passage of services. The lattice also uses up to 50% less steel than traditional hot rolled beams, which means that fluctuations in raw material prices have less impact on the total build cost.


Metsec’s purlin range was re-launched in June 2008 with more efficient profiles. Made from cold rolled galvanised steel, they have a minimum yield strength of 450 N/mm² giving maximum performance for minimum weight. The range includes fully compatible Z- and C-section profiles in depths ranging from 142 mm to 342 mm.


Metsec is the market leader in providing light gauge, galvanised steel structural framing systems suitable for a wide range of applications in construction. Its two main product groups are Metframe and SFS (Steel Frame System). Metframe is a pre-panelised framing system, fabricated off-site and assembled on site with metal deck/concrete floors supported on C-section steel joists providing a complete superstructure. SFS is a fast track steel stud and track frame which is fixed as infill between the main structural frame members and provides a carrier for insulation, exterior cladding and interior wallboard. While Metframe is pre-engineered off-site, in line with


the demands of Modern Methods of Construction, SFS is stick built on site to allow for greater flexibility. Both systems are structurally proven and independently tested to provide thermal, acoustic and fire resistance. Sections are bar-coded to facilitate easy construction on site.
