BUILDING SERVICES 55 Fire detection JIS auto bleed value

- a real time saver If you have a radiator heating system or just a water-heated towel rail, how often have you cursed yourself for not bleeding the system when it was needed? JIS Europe has come up with a neat and simple attachment, which means that air-blocks need never happen again. The Auto Bleed Valve is small, unobtrusive, simple to fit and inexpensive yet it saves endless frustration, wasted time and money in situations where air regularly enters an individual appliance or a circulatory system. Automatically pressure activated, the Valve vents the appliance as soon as it becomes necessary, increasing the energy efficiency of the heating system. Click here to request literature

revolutioned Hochiki Europe has introduced a new rapid-fix fire system cabling solution that, it claims, will revolutionise the way in which fire detection systems are installed. Called Smart-Fix+, it is described as a “plug-and-play” system that cuts installation costs, reduces waste, diminishes the need for site labour, improves site efficiency and accelerates construction programmes. The new system drastically reduces the need for snagging, on-site testing and commissioning, as every Smart-Fix+ assembly is 100 percent factory tested. Click here to request literature

Instantaneous energy saving hot

water products The Electric Heating Company (EHC) has launched a new generation of electric water heaters which deliver instant hot water and impressive energy savings. There are five heaters in the range: Twister, Amicus, Opus, Luna and the electronic Bonus. Each heater switches on automatically when the tap is turned on so hot water is provided straight away. Because energy is only consumed while the water is running there are no losses from heat storage. And because each product is smaller than traditional hot water units, and more aesthetically pleasing, they can be located closer to where hot water is needed. Click here to request literature

Beam detection served up The deluxe Caja Mágica tennis complex in Madrid, Spain, recently opened and hosted the Mutua Madrileña Open Tournament from 8th-17th May 2009. As a part of its fire safety system, the venue is using around 50 assorted Fireray 50R and Fireray 100R beam-type smoke detectors from Fire Fighting Enterprises to help protect the large indoor spaces created by the three main, fully coverable stadiums. One Fireray 100R can detect smoke over an area as great as 1500m2

Prevent scalding water All existing bath and shower installations in public, residential and commercial premises should be upgraded to provide the same protection from injurious scalding hot water as is now necessary in new homes, says Honeywell, the leading manufacturer of water valves and heating controls. This is easy to achieve by fitting failsafe Honeywell thermostatic mixing valves (TMVs) in the supplies to hot water outlets. An amendment to Part G of the Building Regulations requires housebuilders to install TMVs on baths and showers from October 2009. Facilities managers can easily protect existing installations by fitting Honeywell TMVs in the hot and cold water supplies to baths, showers and basins.

Altherma Air Source Heat Pump Altherma Air Source Heat Pump from Daikin has been approved under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS). As a certified product under MCS, Altherma will qualify for grant aid and householders can apply for a grant of up to £900. The MCS gives consumers the guarantee that certified Microgeneration products and the installers of those products have conformed to a rigorous set of standards. The criteria for product certification include evaluation of manufacturing quality and operation performance, to ensure the certified products deliver the required levels of energy efficiency and therefore, running cost savings. (Current product certification applies to Altherma Split Range ERHQ006-016.)

need about 15 point detectors to safely protect. An inherent benefit is the reduced aesthetic impact, as well as requiring a fraction of the cabling and maintenance due to the reduced number of detectors needed. Click here to request literature

HVAC System boosted

Safe in the hands of chubb

Residents of a Housing Association in North Lincolnshire are being protected against fire thanks to a new alarm servicing contract with Chubb Fire. Chubb Fire is part of UTC Fire & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. North Lincolnshire Homes (NLH) ordered a review of the maintenance of fire alarms, extinguishers, hose reels and dry risers last year. North Lincolnshire Homes took over ownership of just under 10,000 properties from North Lincolnshire Council in 2007. Chubb was appointed on the strength of its reputation as the leader in fire safety.

The potential energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness of buildings’ HVAC systems has been given a huge boost by CentraLine from Honeywell, with its new Spyder terminal unit controller and Zio programmable wall units. Spyder and Zio enable CentraLine Partner companies to design and install complex HVAC control systems cost-effectively. They satisfy user demands for greater energy efficiency with ease of use, yet with simpler design, installation and commissioning than previously possible. Zio and Spyder communicate through a two-wire, polarity-insensitive connection using Sylk bus communications.
